unexpected close

I am a computer novice with an IBM PC using Windows XP. I recently had a severe problem with popups and had to run several different programs in order to fix it. Now, however, both Firefox and Outlook Express close unexpectedly and take me to my desk top. Another problem I've noticed is that I can't run "search" after clicking the "start" icon. Again, I'm returned to the desktop. Any advice is sincerely appreciated. Thanks

Re-register Jscript.dll and Vbscript.dll, see if that solves anything.

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regsvr32 jscript.dll, and then click OK.
3. Click OK.
4. Click Start, and then click Run.
5. In the Open box, type regsvr32 vbscript.dll, and then click OK.
6. Click OK. Try the Search function.

Went through the steps in "Special Removal Procedures" which seemed to fix the unexpected closings. If they, return I'll follow the secondary house cleaning procedures.
