i reqally appreciate this website and used to trust it implicitly, which is just stupid.

it finally came time to flatline my laptop for the first time. i decided to put some protection on asap, so downloaded AVAST to be the antivirus behind zone alarm firewall, to protect me while downloading all updates etc.

so avast doesnt work with zone alarm, and furthermore, you can't remove it!!! now i essentially have fresh malware on my clean install!!!!!

wtf am i supposed to do now? re reinstall my os just to get rid of avast? it should have a big warning- YES THIS IS FREE BUT YOU CAN'T EASILY REMOVE IT AND IT HAS PROBS PALYING NICE

oh- and right? you shouldn't have 2 av progs running, but i can't get rid of this one!!!!!!!

Well, rants do little to get anything done.

    How about some information?
    --What errors are you receiving?
    --What OS are you using?

I've removed Avast on countless machines without problem. In regards to two AV programs....Zone Alarm isn't antivirus. Are you using a different AV program w/ Avast?

I think he means that he can't get another AV until he gets rid of Avast, as opposed to suggesting ZA is an antivirus app. I'd personally look closer at ZA as the problem, as it seems to be getting a rep for problems after sthe SP2 debacle. I use Avast on all my stuff, and never had a problem. Sygate is my choice, but I've seen good words for Outpost, also.

Re: ungrateful gripe :and acer sucks

exactly. but thanks to star17, i seem to have deleted avast.

Adrynalyne, the reason i titled my post as ungrateful gripe was so that anyone reading it would be prepared for a lil b*ching from a user.

not everyone (which, in this case means people like me today) takes a lot of care and reads everything and does what they should do (to be fair to me- if everyone did this all the time in all aspects of life, there would be no life!!!!)

so- i knew i was gonna flatline my computer, i knew that i wanted to get some stuff online, but in the meantime, i just wanted a little firewall and a/v protection running. i had zone alram up, avast then came up and said it didn't like za....\

but the frustration came from trying to do a clean install on my acer notebook!!!! their provided recovery disks are just images of the c drive. no partioning, no formatting, just a dirty reinstall!!!

so i used my friend's dell disk to partition and format my hdd and then put the acer version of the os back on... flash back forward to then, 6 hours later (oh yeah, the acer overheted so bad that it collapsed during re-install) that the av and fw decided to fight, and here we are posting on mg...

I agree with Adrynalyne, star17, and Just Playin' in their responses, although I'm sure that it isn't needed. I've never had a problem with Avast, but have with ZoneAlarm, and that is why I use Sygate. I've installed and uninstalled Avast on many computers with no issues and am a happy user.

    More information is necessary! :)

There is nothing wrong with ZoneAlarm.

In EVERY magazine review I have ever read, it comes first and highly recommended, and is also highly recommended by Gibson's Research, a very well respected security site.

That doesn't mean it's perfect, no software is, but it doesn't mean it's not good either.

Efibacchus, if you are serious about resolving this situation, then please post some relevant information as requested, as well as what steps you have taken and tried.

    Well...

Since Sp2, I've heard nothing good about the stability of ZA. As for Gibson Research being well respected....

    ***GUFFAW!***

    :p:p

Near as I can tell, the OP has fixed his problem with the tool Star posted earlier.

I don't trust many reviews on software, they are more-often-than-not paid bias. My method of review is to download it, install it, and see how it works for me.

Zone Alarm, specifically the True Vector engine, has documented compatability issues with dozens of programs pre- and post SP2. It's a decent program, but has baggage. The history of problems of the average user when trying to remove it has been well-documented on this forum in the time I've been here.

As far as Steve Gibson goes, IMHO his LeakTest program is better suited for testing condoms ;)

Not trying to be argumentative with you Insomniac, just offering up a counter opinion :)

No, I understand, and you are only going by your experience.

    Mine, however, is the opposite.

As far as reviews being paid, I don't mean dime-a-dozen internet sites.

I was talking about long established and well-respected magazines.

I have never had a problem with ZA, and I have been using it since it's inception.

Nor have the people I have ever suggested it to, and most people who use it.

I still want to know what is wrong with Gibson, and whoever doesn't like his programs or site, please let me know your programming experience, and how many programs you have written so we can compare them. :p

ZA is notorious for not uninstalling properly and can leave some of it's "security" restrictions in place. I've found this to be the case numerous times,my most recent being the uninstall of ZA and then installing Firefox; Firefox would not work until I reinstalled ZA and set it to "allow" Firefox access, then I uinstalled ZA and never looked back.

The only thing I don't like is that you have to download the complete program just to update it.

I look forward to the day when you can update via the program.

Coding doesn't make you a security expert. My problem with Mr. Gibson is his, "the sky is falling" paranoia style of writing that tends to induce panic rather than teach the masses.

That doesn't rank highly with me.

No one said coding makes you a security expert.

As far as "the sky is falling", yes there is some of that, but basically that is what he mostly does, so to him the "sky is probably falling".

Anyway, his writing style doesn't make his information, or site, inaccurate or incorrect.

    Guess I misread that...

Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

For the record, nobody said his writing was inaccurate, or incorrect ;)

Any site that spreads paranoia and panic is not a respectable site to me.

That's fair enough. I have no problem with that.

Everyone is entitled to their views and opinions. ;)
