Unhide.exe related question

Every now and then my new Win7 computer boots up with a few desktop icons missing. A guy told me to run unhide.exe. I ran it but it stopped saying a folder (apparently where the files go) was not there. I took that to mean it was some other issue.

Later, after reconstructing most (?) of the icons, I ran it again and it said nothing about a missing folder and MAY HAVE added one icon.

I can't find where anyone tells the name of the virus that is supposed to be hiding these icons. Is that because no one knows or because there are a whole bunch of them that do it?

Oddly, a network HD (its icon was one of those missing) was also invisible. The next time I booted up, the network drive was no longer missing.

This is puzzling to me as they come. Does it make sense to someone else?

Frankly I don't recall the specific name of the malware, but that piece of malware creates a bunch of folders in your temp folder where the icons and files get moved to. If those folders are not there, unhide will not help you. So I guess you are having a different issue.

Frankly I'm wondering why there is a way to retrieve the icons but apparently no way to identify and kill the virus causing the problem.
