unimpressed by advice on how to decomress

admittedly as evidenced by my profile you can see that i am quite computer daft....
here is my problem - i was having a difficulty with the XP disc cleanup tool...
i use it very regularly, however the files selected for decompression simply would not compress. i tried and tried and it still failed so i turned to the guru of goole for higher enlightenment.
There i was given specific instructions on how to "fix it", only to have "it" vanish before my eyes never to return....
obviously if i would have delved further i would have discovered that their idea of fixing it was removing the decompression action altogether .....while my idea was to fix it so that it would compress the 50 million and 2 megathingys that it has heretofore refused to compress.... no matter how many attempts i've made at it. (it has worked in times past tho)
is there anyone out there who can help me resurrect and hopefully coax it back into working properly or
do i have to stay depressed because my files refuse to compress ?
(absolutely no drama, exaggeration or sarcasm has been added for effect)

thank you for your help. The problem is that i have tried that exact same thing a few times without success...i am not sure whether it is my luck or my PC... do you know of another method that might work?
