    dell inspiron b130 - (a notebook)
    windows xp home
    version 5.1.2600 service pack 2 build 2600

have been following malware and removal guides but for my desktop...

    meanwhile on my labtop...

noticed that my recently updated itunes 7.something has been messing with performance and i didn't like the interface anyway. restored ipod to the original factory settings.

reinstalled my itunes software from disk.
wouldn't recognize my ipod - message said installation error

i read on a non - majorgeeks forum to delete ipodservice.exe and itunes helper.exe before reinstalling itunes.

did that. emptied recycling bin. via add/remove programs I removed ipod updater, itunes, and quicktime. add/remove programs warned me that removing quicktime might mess with my some of the programs on my computer. I selected "uninstall" (not "unistall everything"). restarted the dell

inserted Itunes disk into the dvd/cd drive. nothing.
right clicked start button. explore. right clicked my computer. manage. selected device manager. the right window showed and exclamation point over the drive. double clicked that. the following message showed: "windows successfully loaded the device driver for but cannot find the hardware device (code 41)"

system restore would not work in normal mode. Did work in safe mode. tried to reboot in normal mode. a normal boot seemed to occur but no video at all and key strike have no effect. rebooted in safe mode. checked the device error. it was gone.

i ran system restore to today's date and it worked. error in back for the disk drive.

since i am such a genius i tried the same procedure on my desktop but did not uninstall quicktime. again the dvd/cd drive was unresponsive this time with the following message: "A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)"

i did not attempt to do a system restore on the second machine. as i am afraid it will explode.

    thank you for your time.

Thanks very much for your help. It worked immediately.
Unfortunately, Itunes and quicktime won't let me get rid of them. I have had to use your registry fix every time i try to uninstall them.

No success so far. I am going to search the geeks forum now to see if anyone has dealt with this.

    thanks again,

    hi,

i am noticing, after fixing my registry to get my dvd/cd drive working again, that the dvd drive no longer writes. none of the software on my computer meant to use the writable dvd drive will recognize.

    please advise.

    thank you for your time,

After running my regfiles, you must reinstall any burning software you would like to keep using.

Strange. my Dvd/cd writing software is "Sonic. MY DVD LE" it cannot write cd or dvd.

However, my dvd watching software works. Also Windows media player is able to rip and burn audio.

when i bring up properties for the DVD/CD drive and click on the hardware tab this is what i get:

    TSSTcorp DVD +-RW TS-L632d Type:DVD/cd-rom drives

should the info under "type" signify that it is a writable drive?

I will try to reinstall the sonic software. Problem: it came with the machine as a teaser edition as an attempt to get the user to by the upgrade. I will check the site to see if they have files available to reinstall my version.

is it possible that the change in registry values has made it impossible for the sonic software to see that is is a writable device, even after i reinstall the software?

    Thanks for your time,

Well, there IS a way, we could pull the entries out of an old restore point from the registry files...

Media Player doesnt use filter drivers, nor does the built in burning software, which is why they still work.

Here, see if these files are on your system.

    pxhelp20.sys

    and

sscdbhk5.sys (this one may not be needed)

If it is, I'll make a regfile that will put it back in as an lowerfilter.

Alrighty then. I'll work on it tonight and get it together for you.

I'm on a Mac atm, its not the easiest thing to get done outside of Windows ;)

Or rather, I'm too lazy :p

    thank you.

I don't know if i need the same thing for my desktop computer.

i have used the registry fix on that machine as well. It has a dvd/cd but the dvd is not writable.

I know i can have written audio cd's but i don't see any software for this under the programs menu. I searched the .sys files that you listed. neither one is on the desktop system.

i'm afraid i don't have a writable cd to test what will happen if i try to burn. When i put an audio cd in the drive only wmp and itunes show up to perform an action. i just put a cd rom in the drive. it does open after a very long wait (to show files) does not play or respond to right click then autoplay.

I will get some recordable cd asap and give them a shot.

    thanks again,

Here ya go. It will most likely require a reboot after....if you experience any adverse effects, remember, you can use my original regfile to remove any changes this one makes.

registry fix #2 does not seem to have worked. the drive makes alot of "shuddering" noise. the software seemed to think that it would be able to write. it went thru the initial process ("transcoding video") which took along time. when it finally got to the writing phase the computer froze. the drive would not respond to anything.

I killed the program and restarted the computer. tried to open the drive to see if it had written any files on to the dvd-r adn it said the it was "invalid".

so i don't think it worked.

at least the software thought it could write even though it never did.

????? not sure what it do next,

    ok,

i restored the registry values. i couldn't get the appropriate stuff from that dell support link. So i did a customer service chat with dell. they sent me the hard copies of the programs that come with the machine. i reinstalled my dvd burning software. finally it works again.

i've finally undone the mess that was created by simply trying to unistall and reinstall quicktime and itunes.

my laptop can use the current versions of itunes. my desktop cannot. so it is still taken hostage by that the current version.

if you have any suggestions about this please advise. otherwise i will re-post this issue in the software forum.

thank you for your help. my computer is usable again. you saved me.
