Uninstalled Kerio 4 now AOl 8.0 locks up PC

I uninstalled Kerio 4 as it was more difficult and more unstable than Kerio 2 and found it had deleted a shared dll.
Subsequently AOL 8.0 fails to complete crashing the PC and locking the keyboard requiring a reboot.
AOL 7.0 and 5.0 run OK. AOl put it down to inadequate memory but it worked OK before
Mother has let the cat scratch her WIn 98 SE cd and I run XP so I have no easy fix.

Running various sotware may have identified the following faults:
    Missing DLLs : hticons.ddl and hypertrm.dll
    Missing file: FFASTLOG.TXT

    System
    win 98SE
128MB of RAM (8MB shared video)
    Spyware and registry cleaners

Does anyone know how to replace the dlls and file including registering them in the registry please?
    Or, any other fix.
    TY

reinstalling AOL 8 should solve the issue. Though I think AOL 9 is out now too..

    Unfortunately not.
Sorry, I have tried so many things forgot to mention the obvious!

AOL 9.0 is not out in the UK.

AOL 8.0 installation hangs at searching formodem. If I install modem through expert setup it hangs at logon screen if I type slowly or after logon if I type quickly.
AOL have a background process runnin which is causing the problem but won't discuss the issue. They have got me to check drivers, global.org etc. and are merely blaming resources which is not the problem.

I need to know how to reload the dlls to eliminate them as a problem.

    TY

The hyperterm.dll should be part of the OS. Which means you should be able to reinstall the hyperterminal component through ADD/REMOVE windows components.
    or
try reinstalling Kerio4. Find the DLL's in question. Copy them, uninstall Kerio and put the DLL's back where they came from. Make sure you register them by going to start..run type
    REGSVR32.EXE [DLLNAMEHERE]
    without the brackets
    or
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=274548

I put the MSKB article last becuase it says US version. Don't know if it will have any "other" effects on the UK version.

In all, the first solution should work.

Many thanks KODO. At least I have found the info I wanted.

Can't do this option without disk
Did that first, failed to work
    Done
Will try this. Hadn't previously been able to find ot how to register DLL's. Each time I do it I forget for the next problem.

if it says it can't find the dll when you try to register it, put the full path to the dll after the REGSVER32.EXE and it should work.

Regsver32 didn't fix it despite full listing or part listing (error messages related to LOAD) BUT I got it in successfully by using an old Win 98 (not SE) disk as the files are the same ostensibly.
PC Doctor on Call now reports no problems.
PC Bug Doctor reports 3 shared file corruptions but want tons of money to fix. These might just be minors ones that don't bother me but I can't tell without paying.

I have tons of free stuff.

Aol 8.0 still crashes so that wasn't the problem, sigh

    Thanks for the help!
    Any other suggestions welcome.

ok, there hav been loads of viruses going around this past week. Have you scanned recently?

I scan every time I go to my mum's. I am not there now and it is 100mile round trip. I am pretty sure I ran an up to date AVG after the problems.
Touch wood, I haven't had any viruses ever on any of my machines in all my time on the net and in the days when we passed around 8" floppies.
I think it is just luck as I rarely had a virus checker.
We don't open spam with attachments or any we recognise as unsolicited. AOL seems to be pretty good as well.
Other than tweak software, well recommended, I don't do a lot of downloading either.

I will check her machine when I next visit. She gets fed up with me hoggin the phoneline.

I am most suspicious of the Kerio unistall as it appeared immediately afterwards.

    TY.

anything's possible. Do you get any errors when it crashes?

Nope, complete lockup including keyboard. Smacks of a background process as the visuals are OK and the bug appears at a specific time slot after launch.
Initially it appeared after logon. Now as the software has been reloaded or I have used another version used and the update process is running the bug hits sooner, before logon.

almost sounds like it's locking up on the init of the modem driver..

The bug originally appear AFTER logon and successful connection (time interval the same). It is only since I have been trying to reload and using another version that the problem appears to be in the area of modem initialisation. Aol takes a little time itself to update things after launch which probably accounts for the time difference.

The software I unistalled that triggered the identification of a problem is, according to their message board messages from others, unstable and buggy. The reports are wide and varied. Maybe it has locked up/reserved some memory locations, resources etc. I don't know how to ascertain that easily. It has been a few years since I wrote any programs and that was never my main job and certainly not for PC applications involving Microsoft.

what kind of machine is it? If it's a name brand PC or a PC built by an authorized MS system builder then it will have the cabs files on the hard drive, usually in c:\windows\options\cabs That's a copy of the 98 disk. The "hticons.dll" and "hypertrm.dll" are in the "win98_61.cab". I've zipped both and attached them, these are from a windows 98 SE disk.
edit: didn't notice the files size, it's over the limit about 200k, PM me your email address and I'll send tem to you.

I found and fixed the dll files according to the software that was reporting the bug. The O/s was loaded by an authorize, charged my mum £30 and didn't even give her a disk. The disk she has is an old one of mine 98se. I will file the location of the windows nfo for future reference.

According to the MS site the hticons.dll is the same for both 98 and 98SE. I loaded one for 98 and the bug went away. I suppose you missed that in my previous drivel:eek: :D

The problem I have with AOL 8.0 is still there. I have been through lots of ideas that didn't work including accidentally disabling all the video ram which was quite interesting restoring without a display whatsover!

I will pass on the dlls write now as I wouldn't be able to do anything with them for a while anyway. If I need them I will PM you if that is ok?

no problem. As for your AOL problem, AOL just sucks, I'd suggest removing it completely in safe mode, then reinstalling with anti virus software disabled.

wheeeell, I did a long post and lost it, butterfinger style.

I'll try that as from what I have read Kerio 4 is a bit of a bloater. I might have a copy of Kerio 2 on one of my laptops.

It smacks of a resource issue as all other issues are now fixed. The PC has never had such a clean disk or regimented registry.
It looks like the cadets have been round it with a toothbrush! And no litter, thanks to the anti-ad brigade.

Thanks, I'll let you know if it gets fixed.
