I'm on Windows XP Home and I want to completely uninstall my Norton Antivirus 2002, which I will replace with Avast... Is uninstalling via Add/Remove programs sufficient enough to get rid of all Norton/Symantec software? I do have RegCleaner installed on my computer so should I search for Symantec/Norton related entries after uninstalling it and remove those as well?

    Thanks for your help

Good choice, I got rid of McAfee and installed AVAST and it's been great (I have WIN XP Home too). Uh, I keep finding traces of McAfee - it doesn't go away quietly.

Is there an UNinstall.exe or unwise...with Norton somewhere in your program files? I would use this first and have it uninstall itself. But yeah, if RegCleaner or something finds anything with Symantec, etc. in it...you can get rid of it once you have AVAST.

Somebody stop me please if I'm wrong....

I used Add And Remove Programs to remove Nortons. Run CrapCleaner to get rid of any extra registry entries and stuff. Manual removal will work just as well, though I didn't because I have Ghost and I didn't want to accidently delete shared files.

I can tell you from experience that uninstalling NAV products are not easy. I switched from one Norton product to another, and had endless problems. I ended up going manually into C:/windows files and application data areas and more to get rid of it. Plus using an uninstall tool from Norton.

Just remember, that add/remove only touches the surface. I found it helpful to contact Symantec and use the online support.

Is norton antivirus 2004 better than Avast?

    Ack.
It took me forever using all the suggestions and tools from here to remove Symantec AV Corp editon and I am still finding bits of it.
I use Avast. I love it. Have had nothing since it was installed. I believe that Norton adds a lot of extra files and that stuff still gets through. We have it at work. I like Avast and how it is really "set-it-and-forget-it".

Yes, I spent almost 3 days in frustration trying to get rid of the files. And Symantec kept answering my e-mails with more pages to follow to delete the information.

I have since sent back the NAV 2004, but have Norton Internet Security 2004 which has been impressive.

I enabled the Norton Internet Security on my works PC's, boss is another one of those people who just click away "update now" warnings, etc. So far so good! Decide to just let everything do what it can in the background as I am not there everyday. Hope I did the right thing!

I run WinME and had Norton SystemWorks installed. Add/Remove didn't begin to touch it. Got grey hair (what little I have left) removing manually. Took days for me. Best advise is to not install it in the first place. I have replaced everything that system works offered (exceptGhost) with free proggies here. They are far more efficient and use far less resources. Avast! rocks!

I agree but I have been using Norton and I haven't any problems so far. I also want to point out while writing this that WinME sucks. It would rather use Win 3.1 than that crap.

Absolutely the same for me -- I finally got rid of McAfee - Ugh - and have had no problems with AVAST.

I uninstaleld Norton Antivirus 2002 via Add/Remove programs, then removed a Symantec Network Driver Update, then removed LiveUpdate and deleted the corresponding folders... I ran RegCleaner and removed like 5 or 6 entries and i see no remanants on my system... Gonna run crap cleaner in a minute...

How did you people know that Norton still lingered on your systems after you tried to uninstall it? I was somewhat content with Norton while i had it but LiveUpdate started F'ing up and I know other free antivirus guards can do the job better so i switchet to Avast...

I think I was doing a Hijackthis! check and noticed several references. Went back through and there were all sorts of folders! that should have been gone. One was a shared components so I just sent it to the recycle bin and as it turned out a couple of programs needed 1 of the files, easy enough to restore.
Hadn't been using Symantec but it kept bringing up error messages with Avast!, so got rid of it. I am happy now!

I run with about 85% of my resources free. Plenty for me. I thought this was about uninstalling Norton. I did not know it was all about bashing a GD OS. I certainly must have read the caption wrong.

I noticed references to McAfee over and over again just running other scanning programs.

I haven't done this but in RegSeeker (which you can find here to download under "Registry") you can click on the top left column for "Find in registry" and type in Norton and see what it finds. There are options you can choose and one is "delete to recycle bin". That may find hidden registry strings or other files.
