My trial of Norton expired and after reading around here, I downloaded the removal tool as well as mse. After removing norton, i tried to install mse and it seemed to go OK, but won't install updates, says it can't connect to internet and I can't figure out what it's talking about. Does it need to connect through explorer? Also, should norton online backup still be listed in my programs?

Can anyone kindly help? Thanks, Amy

    Hello Amym
To begin with, you say you ran the Norton removal tool.
Did you reboot? Is Norton in your add/removal panel?
When you downoaleded MSE did you reboot that too? You could start by uninstalling and reinstalling MSE
Do you have a router? If you have no internet you must be writing to us with another device, correct.
Could you please tell us a bit more about your machine, like what version of Windows you are using, XP or Win 7, your browser, is it MSIE 8 or 9?
Perhaps a bit more information will help us help you.
If the reboot works and downloads are ok please let us know.

    Thanks Peterr-

I do have internet, I use Firefox and that has no problem connecting, but when norton finished uninstalling, it tried to connect to the internet using explorer and that wouldn't connect. Explorer also won't connect when I just try with the icon to connect in the normal way. This got me thinking that maybe mse was also trying to use explorer to get updates and that's why it wasn't updating/installing correctly.

I've only had the computer a month, the trial of norton just ran out. It's an HP Pavillion desktop.

    Do you have MSIE 9?
It sounds like you are telling me that Internet Explorer is the problem and Firefox is fine.

Before we go further I would like someone to join us with more expertise.

I would try uninstalling and reinstalling the Explorer if you have MSIE 9 and if you don't I would install it.

Wait to see if some tech would be good enough to give you an opinion before implementing my advise.
Write back if you need more help and no one has joined us and we will see what we can do.

    Hi Peterr -

I gave you some false info in my last reply - I can NOT connect to the internet (I am on a laptop typing this, so I do have service). I thought Firefox was connecting, but it was just their search/home page or whatever it's called.....it won't connect to anything else.

On thinking things through a bit more, here is a question: Do you know if the free trial of Norton also includes a firewall that is automatically installed and running with the free AV?

While uninstalling, I left the box checked that asked if I wanted to turn on a firewall if one wasn't already on. I'm wondering if this turned on a different firewall than had been running up to the point Norton was uninstalled and the settings of this new firewall are preventing me from connecting to the internet.

Windows firewall is on right now, I just don't know if it's been on all along and is thus not the problem or if the Norton uninstall turned it on and it needs to have some settings changed to allow internet connection.

I looked at the settings and don't understand them enough to start turning stuff on and off :-o

Sorry for the confusion, I hope this is making sense. Amy

Never aplologize, we all make errors.
Let's see. You cannot connect to the internet. You have a laptop.

Look at the icons or keys on your keyboard.

On mine it is the third key from the left at the top row and looks like a tower sending out signals.
Click it to see if it allows you to go online. It is the button that enables and disables internet.

Also, go to start, programs, uninstall programs and see if there are any Norton entries there. If there are, you do not have Norton uninstalled. You should have MSE listed there, not Norton as you cannot have 2 a/v programs.. If it is and you already clicked to have the firewall on so that is good. Click start, control panel, system security and see if the firewall is on.

Tell us, do you have XP or Win 7 and if you have MSIE 8 or 9?
    Write back.

    Any help welcome!!
