Uninstalling Skype!

    Specs: I have Windows XP, Skype 4.1

    One day two weeks ago, I randomly got an error from Skype saying that I couldn't open Skype. Ok, so I thought I'd uninstall and reinstall it. No problem. Naturally, I tried uninstalling Skype by going to Control Panel, etc. Nothing. It wouldn't allow me!

    Then, I tried downloading RevoUninstaller. No progress. I also tried this one program called Windows (something). Nada.

    I've tried contacting Skype, but their solutions were inadequate (basically seeing if it was working in the background, which it isn't).

    Help?

    Did you just try to reinstall it without uninstalling it? Sometimes an installer offers a repair option.

    You want to be sure you removed it from startup so that it is not running. CCleaner can help you remove it from startup easily. You may need to manually delete folders and clear registry entries. I did a lot of looking, this is the best I found:

    FYI, most uninstallers only remove programs that you installed AFTER you installed the uninstaller. That sounds confusing :) Basically, the uninstaller can uninstall something it did not see you install. It would not know what to remove.

    P.S Once you don't log in for 2 weeks, you will no longer be a "Skype user".

    Let me know how you make out.

    Tried what exactly? That link tells you (a bit long) how to remove it manually after you fail to uninstall it. It's possible it's a botched uninstall, so;

    An installed program has only a few things to look for:

    Remove it from startup (or disable any process it runs)
    Delete the folder it was installed to (Program Files\ Skype most likely)
    Remove any registry entries. Again, CCleaner can most likely do this for you. CCleaner can also remove the entry from add\remove programs.

    That's it.

    Error msg when I try to run Windows Installer CleanUp Utility: “This application has failed to start bc MSVBVM60.DLL wasn’t found. Re-stalling the application may fix this problem.” [I've tried to add thsi .dll file, but to no avail.]

    So I tried following the 2nd opt (last msg on the Skype link) before also. When I try to run fix.bat, this error msg appears: “This installation package couldn’t be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package.

    Try it as I mentioned:

    Remove it from startup (or disable any process it runs)
    Delete the folder it was installed to (Program Files\ Skype most likely)
    Remove any registry entries. Again, CCleaner can most likely do this for you. CCleaner can also remove the entry from add\remove programs.

    1) It doesn't appear on startup
    2) It won't let me fully delete the folder
    3)It doesn't show up on the Add/Remove programs; CCleaner didn't fix it :(

    If you cant delete the folder, then something is running. Go to Administrative tools, services in your control panel and look for Skype. Double click it and disable it, then try and remove the folder. It should give you an error why the folder will not delete telling you what file is locked.

    Error msg when I try to delete the Skype prgm folder: "Cannot delete Phone: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)"

    This changes everything, you might be having hard drive errors, which could also explain your Skype problem.

    CRC errors happen when there's a bad spot on the media of your hard disk.

    Check Your Hard Disk for Errors
    - Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
    - At the command prompt, type chkdsk /f, and then press ENTER.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Note If you receive a message similar to the following;
    The type of the file system is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive.

    - Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)
    press Y, press ENTER, and then restart your computer.
    - When Chkdsk finishes, close the command prompt.
    - Reboot your computer and try to delete the folder now.
