Uninstalling Windows ME from Dell Computer

    I have a Dell Computer I bought which had Windows ME already installed on it.
    It has caused too many problems. How do I uninstall it so that I may install a different Windows operating system? I am past warranty so Dell tech support is expensive.

    Good question Ace. Newer operating systems like XP will detect you have an os at which point you can tell the install to format it as NTFS. XP is a far superior operating system and a good choise if you can swing the money for it. It makes installing easier too. That said, have a read here, let me know what else we can answer:

    also, the first xp install disks didn't boot from the cd...you had to use 6 floppies! :eek: (which you can download)

    Go to the Dell website, and look at what it takes to update your system to XP. My 4100 Dimension now 4 years old needs a BIOS flash and I will have some printers, etc that are not recognized by XP- not to say I cannot use them still. It will not Plug N Play.

    You may then need to format the drive, and reinstall what you are wanting to save. Backup prior to any system changes anything you do not want to lose.


    The downloads are available even if your system is out of warranty.
    The guides are fairly straightforward.

    I have an even older Otiplex that I dl new ethernet and sound drivers for.
