Unknown PCI Device, Audio Drivers?

Well, once again, I spend two days tring to solve a problem, then finally post here, out of desperation--hardware this time, a pci device that just won't run or act right...I just put a new motherboard in this tower, an ASUS P5GC-MX/133, w/a Pentium D, and I actually had an easy run w/microsoft, on my HD w/XPpro installed, which was good...but then I ran the ASUS cd, downloading the drivers, had some problems w/audio driver, still doesn't quite work, and when I google this device ID, it does seem to be audio related...so anyway, I did search on majorgeeks, found similar problem, so I removed all realtek stuff from programs, and then reinstalled drivers...

Still no audio, plus, even more agravating to me, I keep getting the "new hardware installed" crap, and I've tried running it every way I can, to get the right drivers, but no deal, and have that PCI device w/the yellow question mark...

Obviously I'm self-taught, in my fifties, and haven't got a clue what to do...have already been to ASUS site, to "Device Manager" and ran thru the wizard, trying to find drivers, both on cd, on internet...but I'm lost, need help...I'm enclosing the Device ID, and I also downloaded an "Unkown Device Identifier" which I'm still trying to sort out...

No advice is too "low level", and I'm sure I've missed something, so any help is much appreciated..meanwhile, I'll try removing and reinstalling the audio drivers again, see if that helps....

    Thankyou!

What do you have installed in your PCI slots?

Nothing at all: I'm using the motherboard's own vga port, and audio outlet too...

A bad install of Realtek HD audio will show an unkown PCI Device.
Does the MS UAA Bus driver show in Device Manager>System Devices?

If not, make sure all Realtek audio is uninstalled. Uninstall the unidentified PCI device.
Install your chipet driver. then install the KB888111, and finally your Realtek driver.
Your chipset and audio drivers are here:
    ASUS P5GC-MX/1333
The KB888111 is a direct download:
    HD_Audio/kb888111xpsp2.exe

There's an MS PCI Bus right above the "unknown" device in DM/System Devices, but I'm not sure if that's the one u r talking about...it's the only one I saw...but anyway, looks like you gave me a good starting point...I had searched and read people w/similar problems on here, but wasn't sure, so I'll give this a whirl, see what develops...I had removed realtek audio, but never done the things you had said, and in that order, and also, I might even be downloading the wrong driver or something...I get lost easy in this stuff...thankyou, back to work ;-)

No, that's not the right device, but do uninstall the unknown one.
Go ahead and install all 3 drivers I suggested.
Your chipset and audio will be the first ones in the lists.
You should do a full shutdown and reboot, after installing all of them. (possibly a couple of times)

Nope:didn't work this time, I'm in the process of going thru it again, seeing if I screwed up somewhere...but uninstalled pci device, and removed realtek, and will plow thru it again...

    Thankyou for your help!

Are you fully updated to SP3?
There is a problem getting HD to install with SP3.
Let me know, because there is a fairly simple way to get the audio to install with out uninstalling SP3.

You can also try this Realtek driver at MG. It usually works when others don't:
Realtek High Definition Audio for 2K\XP\03

Yes, got SP3...I don't know if it matters, but every once in a while, I'll have a little glitch, because this is an acronis mirror OS...I fried my motherboard--that's why I'm doing all this, but I was throwing all kinds of stuff into this computer, including the OS, I had lost track of which was the original...but anyway, after microsoft had me re-register and all, it seemed to be running o.k...everything else seemed to work alright, just this audio...and second time I tried, same thing happened...I used all downloads--I do have the accompanying cd--but again, both had same result...I guess I'll try that driver at MG, after first removing realtec again...

Thanks again for hanging with me on this...I do appreciate it...

Nope, didn't work: got the mg download perfectly, installed w/out a hitch, then, upon reboot, get the "new hardware" deal, and no drivers for "pci device" and no sound either...weird...oh well...

SP3 doesn't support HD audio. This will help it install with out uninstalling and re-installing SP3
This patch is required before any of the HD device drivers are installed
    1. On your PC change the CSDVersion registry key to XP SP2:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows\CSDVersion value=200
    2. Restart your PC
    3. Install HD_Audio/kb888111xpsp2.exe
    4. Change the CSDVersion key back to XP SP3 again:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows\CSDVersion value=300
    5. Restart your PC, finalize configuration of your PC, sysprep and capture.

    Directions:

Goto Start>Run and type in regedit , then click OK.
Click the plus signs in front of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>Current Control Set>Control, and finally, click Windows.
In the right panel you will see CSDVersion.
    Right click it, choose Modify.
In the highlighted input window, you should see 300. Change it to 200.
Click OK, close regedit and restart your PC. Windows will now think it is SP2 and allow you to install the UAA and your HD audio driver.
Make sure to reboot and then test your sound BEFORE, changing the value back to 300.

Then follow the same steps to change it back to SP3. Change the 200 back to 300.

I'm listening right now to Ricky Nelson sing "Lonesome Town" ...I had totally given up on getting this right, up all night, and finally posted here, as MG had helped me twice w/malware removal...

So *thankyou*--it worked perfectly, everything is just how it should be, audio is great...and I'm a happy camper... :)

I reset it to 300, so all is well...

Words fail me: i'm so grateful you kept at it, as I had given up...
