You can imagine my dissapointment when AMD released their new Phenom II processors just mere months after I paid for my new Phenom I tripple core, i'm a student and I saved for a while for the bragging rights of having their latest processors. New im hearing that its possible to unleash the tripple core phenom II's full power by unlocking the fourth core.

What I want to know is, is it possible to do the same thing on the old phenom I? And if it is, how do I go about doing it.

This was possible only on the early release of AMD X3 710 and 720 PhenomII processors and only with an AMD790 chipset on the motherboard. The current generation of PhenomII X3 710 and 720 chips cannot be unlocked. And, no, you cannot do the same with your Phenom AMD X3 chip, they cannot be unlocked. However, I have seen some references to some folks unlocking the new AMD X2 550 and 250 PhenomII chips. They are dual core CPUs and I guess they can be 'upgraded' to triple and/or quad core chips. I haven't done much research on it yet, but I'm sure that Google will provide all the info needed on this one....
