I recently had a lightning strike destroy my internal modem and then the motherboard (fortunately covered by insurance). So I bought a new PC and the service desk there were able to take the old hard drive and put it in an external cage connected to the the new PC via a USB 2.0 link.

Unfortunately some of the files on the old drive were protected. I can see the unprotected files but I can't see the protected folders and there seems to be no way to unprotect them. The O/S says I don't have access to them, and I can't open them, copy them etc.

This is all on Windows XP SP-2. I can provide drive details if necessary.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks to both of you for the advice.

I tried this last night and it worked fine.
