i recently reformatted and installed XP

as soon as i logged on (dial-up) my computer started sending and receiving - even befroe i started explorer!

so i downloaded and ran shoot the messenger + search and destroy + spyware blaster + zone alarm (which is annoying because i don't know what and what not to allow)

these didn't solve the problem so i reformatted and started from scratch running the above software before logging on - again no success!!!

who is my computer communicating with and how do i make it stop???!!!

bad enuff having dial-up at home without having it slowed down by unsolicited activity!

    please help

Im more confused how you know it is sending and receiving data before you start. What leads you to believe that. This could be all for nothing. I can shut off all my computers in the house, but my cable modem still flashes, nothings going in or out. If your formatting and clean, I can not believe there is anything.

So, let me know what is sending, or what makes you think it is and we can go from there.

when i click on the dial-up icon (the 2 little computers in the system tray that go off and on green when connected) it tells me that my computer is sending and receiving information at a rate that seems to be maximum for my connection

it didn't previously do this and the little computers are constantly lit up even when i am not requesting info i.e. accessing the internet

this makes it extremely slow to use the internet now

Okay so you are using a dial-up connection. But who are you connecting to? Who is your ISP?
Could it be their software trying to update? Take a look your Processes (by hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and selecting Processes) and see what is running. Anything suspicious?

There is not too much to check out (other than the Processes). You should be able to answer the other questions right now.
