Unusual and hard to determine problem.

Ok so ive been directly connected to my internet ( modem goes straight to my computer ) and recently my gf got a computer. Now our isp makes it so if we try and use a hub to split the internet it detects 2 computers and then insists we need to pay for 2 internet's (sic) just cause we have more than one computer. very lame but this is Comcast.

Anyways getting past that, our internet is working pretty stable on a router. This router is a DLINK DI-524 router. The only problems i have are very often timeouts which adversely effect me in the mmorpg archlord ( ill be running around stop for a sec, then when i go to resume movement or anything it boots me from the server for timing out ) as well as aim opening a window and closing it really fast and reconnecting to the aim servers, same with xfire (Xfire has been disconnected) unfortunetly it takes xfire like 8 minutes to automatically retry the connection so im always having to reconnect manually. Games such as fps's and more realtime games only expieriance very small spikes but its very playable and nearly unnoticable. One other program is ventrilo... i get low pings for a while then ill either stop recieving info from the server completely, then when i try to speak join a different channel or anything the whole window goes black and acts like im not connected OR everyones voice storms my computer at the same time. while in ventrilo my ping goes from 16-50 stable then randomly 40,500 in that area.

Now im pretty sure this has nothing to do with my computer because my girlfriends computer has the same exact problems, i know this is very vague and ive hesitated asking for help on this issue as i know i wont recieve any help for a while, but i know that their is probably a "correct" way to have my network setup so it doesnt do this. figured id ask the folks around major geeks forums.

I've never tried those games but you might want to check forwarding the ports. Certain games require a port (or range of ports) to be open for your internal I.P. If you are unsure how, just search these forums as there are many good step by steps and it varies by router brand.

 

I would think it was that except for every program is fully functional, it just has a weird timing out issue. I dont think you need to forward ports for aim and xfire either. Everything is working and ive tried forwarding ports... do you think it would be my router?

 

Just a little update. A friend recommended i have a torrent program seeding nonstop at a low kbps to keep my connection from timing out. And so far it seems to work, left ventrilo up all night, no timeouts, aim and xfire didnt timeout once, and the mmorpg archlord i play no longer says server connection has ended, or this other weird thing it does where if i dont click anywhere for a while then click nothing happens but 10 seconds later i get flooded with responses from the server (me flying around the screen people wizzing by me, lots of noise from people buffing all at the same time). so this is temporarily resolved, if anyone is expieriancing similar issues i reccomend getting a very lightweight torrent app called Utorrent, find some legal torrent and seed it at a very low kbps to keep your connection fresh. If anyone has more insight to the true nature of this problem id love to hear it. thx in advance
