Unusual disk activity

I am having some issues with my disk being constantly accessed every second or so. This occurs all the time when my computer is on, and its non-stop. The issue isn't malware, I've already been through that process in the malware forum with TimW.

This has been going on for two weeks now not long after I did a clean reinstall of windows 7 and wiped everything off my computer. It's not indexing, I've tried turning that off to no avail. What I have noticed though is when I look at my task manager, there is a process called System with a description of NT Kernel&System that is constantly running up to 20-30% of my cpu, then coming back down to zero, matching the hard drive activity. I can't figure out what the source of this process is, nor can I stop it through task manager.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi

What Service Pack and its only SP1 for Windows 7 thats current do you have or do you have Windows 7 RTM as in the original version?

NT Kernel and System is normal in having some usage, in any version of Windows, but I would be suspecting a 3rd party application as the cause so boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot and choose Safe Mode with Networking) and see how you get on as in is the issue still with you?

can you attach as listed a list of your startups and see below guide for info on this.

I am running SP1. When booting into safe mode the problem stops. Attached the log.

When I restarted, I got a blue screen error saying something along the lines of driver power state failure. I could post some minidumps I've had recently if you want.

Seems to me the iaanotif or the Seagate Dashboard are the most likely programs causing the disk reads.

You might get CCleaner and use the Tools>StartUp>Disable function to temporarily stop them and reboot, just to see if it stops the activity.

You, good sir, deserve some good thanks. I deserve a slap on the forehead for not thinking about it. I truly appreciate that awful repetitive noise being gone.

See, now I realize that this all started when I got my new external hard drive and plugged it in and that damn seagate dashboard installed. I failed to make the correlation completely. I will now uninstall that crappy program.

Yes that's true. I've had a similar problem.

Good, so you narrowed it down to the Seagate program. Looking up MemeoLauncher.exe had conflicting answers about what it did, but one source said it was an always-on backup utility which might explain why it was so active.

That's what I got too from doing a little research. What I hate about it is I didn't choose to install the memeo backup program. I don't know why it installed. It doesn't make much sense for the program to run and backup if my external drive isn't even plugged in. Bad software design if you ask me.

I was in Best Buy last month looking at internal hard drives and saw they had some deals on externals. But as soon as I saw "backup" in the name, I though that sounds like trouble. Some program is going to be running at random times deciding what to be backing up. I guess I was clairvoyant.

I think if you just want a straight external you have to careful which model you choose.

I hope it is/was fairly easy to disable/uninstall the software.

Yea the software comes with the hard drive, but it wasn't hard to uninstall. When you plug in the hard drive the first time, it's ready to go. I installed the software that came with it cause it was on the drive prior to. I thought it was some sort of practical application. HAHA

It's the software that claims to be clairvoyant if it can decide what to backup and what not to. But oddly enough it's not clairvoyant enough ot know when it should be doing this backup (i.e. when the hard drive isn't even plugged in)

    :p
