    Hey, im new here, and i know this is a greta site for help. I have a network with 5 other comps, on a lynksis. its pretty fast most of the time, none of us do major dling or heavy internet stuff. lately the connection has been really slow, takes about 30 seconds just to open my homepage, when usually it takes 2 seconds. I ran a virus scan and found nothing, and spyware scan. i reset the cable modem and the router, after i did that my home page opened regularly again, but if i made another connection, it would go slow again, and so the reset only fixed it for about 3 seconds. Mabye i need a new virus/spyware scanner? i have avg and spyware doctor. My roomates are gone, and i think all there comps are off, so i dont think its just a bandwidth problem. Any help/suggestions would be great

    Okay, your problem is really broad so let's try to narrow it down. The first thing I would do is download this awesome free program to clean out some clutter in your computer:

    http://www.deletehistoryfree.com/download/04/dhf.exe

    Run that first. Next, reboot in Safe Mode with Networking so you can see if it is a software problem interfering with your web surfing. I have no idea what operating system you are using, so read this:

    http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

    If you don't run into a slowdown when in safe mode, do this (this is for windows xp, but I'm pretty sure you can run event queries on older OSes without a problem):

    Start -> Run -> CMD

    Type in this (in this order):

    1. cscript //H:CSCRIPT
    2. eventquery.vbs /fi "type eq error" > %systemdrive%\EV_TROUBLESHOOTING.txt
    3. eventquery.vbs /fi "datetime eq 05/22/06,12:01:00am-05/29/06,04:30:00pm" /fi "type eq warning" >> %systemdrive%\EV_TROUBLESHOOTING.txt
    4. I'm kind of curious what types of errors you have, so just post the output of the EV_TROUBLESHOOTING.TXT file here please. It's in your root drive (the first folder when you double click on the drive letter associated with the OS you are currently running).

    BTW if typing all of that is too much of a pain (and I bet it is), you can create a quick batch file and copy/paste everything into it to execute everything for you:

    1. Double click on My Computer
    2. Go into any drive really
    3. File -> New -> Text Doc
    4. Name it "EV_BATCH.BAT"
    5. Press enter, then click "Yes" on the warning. We don't care about unstable files (just kidding)
    6. Right click on the EV_BATCH.BAT file, then go to Edit
    7. Copy and paste the 3 commands listed in steps #1-3 above, without the numbers in front of them of course. Then click on File -> Save, and then double click on the EV_BATCH.BAT file to execute it.
    8. Follow step #4 on the first set of steps to paste the contents of the EV_TROUBLESHOOTING.txt file

    Anyway, I wouldn't rule out a virus or spyware, just because the programs you used didn't pick up on anything. I'm leaning toward a software issue/pagefile/RAM problem though.

    I think I'm going to go pass out somewhere and dream of non computer-related problems.
