I read your question again, for installing windows go into bios, make sure the cdrom is in the first boot order and save and exit and off you go. I was'nt sure if you were asking this or not but good luck again.

you shouldn't have to do a reinstall of windows when connecting any new hardware, including motherboard. but, having said this, it is a good idea as your new installation will be configured for the new MB etc.

    You are incorrect, sir.

    steve max is right on.

The drivers are too different if it won't boot.

Windows XP cannot load IDE drivers on the fly. It sets them from within windows or during the initial install. Therefore if different ones are needed, which is the case 90% of the time, then Windows must be reinstalled.

A repair can be performed, but there are many inherent problems with doing that. Its much better just to start over.

yeh was windows xp, got no idea how and why it worked though!

can you uninstall an OS??? you could just boot from xp cd and install, failing that get yourself 6 floppies and create the setup floppies and boot from them (its painful i know....sigh)

You do not have to rebuild. The issues stems from the hal.dll. This is what plug n play is built off of. Hal's have a tendecey of being different between motherboards. You can do an in-place upgrade on the system and this will detect the proper hal. It will also detect all drivers needed to load the system. XP and 2003 are very intuative when it comes to in-place upgrades....compared to windows 2000 so there is a lot lees that can go wrong with the system after it is done.

As Adrynalyne states a fresh install is the best but if you need to get data off an in-place will work. Just remember that if you do an in-place all Service packs and hotfixes have to be re-installed as well.
