I assume at least some people around here use UPCS in case of a power outage and such.

A really good one might go over $200 but i have seen some in the low 100 range which might be good.

Can anyone advise any brands and such? Some that will work with modern desktop power supplies as well as older ones as i hear not all UPCS will function good straight from the battery with some new power supplies

We use APC at work or build our own for larger systems. The most important thing is sizing, most of our trouble comes from undersized UPC's as people upgrade their systems or use the UPC's as extension cords.
You probably have to double your price if you want to power a gaming system for more than just shut down time.
Also remember these units are not maintenance free, batteries get replaced and a large surge usually renders the surge protection useless. Surge protection sacrifices itself to save your equipment. APC has an estimator at their website, but I cannot get the link to work.
Like I said, be sure your UPS is big enough for your system and time requirements. The small UPS's are for routers and switches, not computer systems.
