Update Last Night?

When I started to turn off my XP PC last night there was a message saying that there was an update and it would be installed before the PC turned off. This morning I can't open Internet Explorer to access the internet.

Did that happen to anyone else? Any ideas?

Hi Rebecca:wave, What kind of update was it, do you remember? I never heard of a Windows update that would do that. See if you can remember what it was that was needing the update: Windows? Java? something else? If so, what?:confused

It was a Microsoft update of some kind. My laptop, which has Vista on it, was also automatically updated overnight, but (thank goodness!) it still allows me to access the Internet.

I shut my PC down and restarted it and it still ignores my requests to start Explorer.

Use System Restore to return the comp to yesterday before the updates. You will then get the updates again but hopefully have your comp back to normal.

You could also remove IE 8 from Add/Remove Programs, reboot and run CCleaner, then reinstall IE 8 and would just get the updates for this. The update that your are referring to was Microsofts latest security patch and included 29 updates. My computer also updated last night. :)

I have just found that my GlassEye (pattern software for stained glass) will not startup, either. When I try to start it, the Task Manager briefly says "Sysfader" running. Then that goes away. When I try to start Explorer, nothing shows on the Task Manager.

Precisely why I turn Automatic Updates off.
Plus lots of the things that are put on in Automatic are for programs that I don't even use. (Outlook, WMP, Messenger.)
Would rather pick and choose what goes on my machine, not what they want.

Have you tried the earlier suggestion by Earthling to do a System Restore?

I waited until this morning, cherishing a belief that maybe overnight it would magically fix itself. But when I came in this morning, it was still the same. I couldn't even get it to shut down last night,so I pulled the plug. So first thing it had to do was a check disc. After that, I restored to Thursday night. As soon as it came up again, it prompted that there were updates waiting. I let it do the updates - I don't want to be surprised Monday morning when nothing works. I would rather get it over with today. Now it is back up and so far seems fine. I think it was hung on a virus file update, because when I was trying to shut it down last night, it kept showing the virus download running. I am keeping my finger crossed that the update it downloaded today was the one that gave it a problem Thursday night,so it will be okay Monday...

    Thank you for your help!

This has happened twice more and both (all three, really) times it did it was when Microsoft Security Essentials was doing a virus update. Any ideas on preventing it in the future?
