I have very good connections to the intrenrt when using I E or Firefox.

When I open a program on my desktop, (spybot, adaware skype etc.) and try to update it it times out and tell me it can't find a connection

Hi began welcome to majorgeeks :)

Do you have a firewall installed? (other than the windows one) if you do check if that is preventing them from connecting.

    Thanks Mr. Brandon,
I have tried many things including running many programs and deleting thingsfrom my registry! I'm lucky I can still operate this machine.

Have you checked your firewall like Q mentioned. I know that happened to me a couple of times only to find out that I accidentally blocked something I shouldn't have.

    Hi began.

Wow! Deleting things from the registry would be my very last resort, if at all!. Hope you saved what you removed in case you want to restore them.
You know you can export selected portions of the registry and save them in either .reg or .hiv (hive) files so that they can be put back. I do that any time I make even a small change.
Here is a discussion and 'how to' :

Are you connected using a router? (wired or wireless) or just a modem?

    Router or just modem?

    Q

EDIT: And you will not fix this by deleting anything in the registry!!!!!

Thanks MJNC, great links! I have been all over the net with this problem and tried many solutions, ever careful to follow the instructions very carefully!

I have a second hard drive that I use as a backup for everything, all I have to do is change cables!
I don't want to transfer any of my latest files as one might be infected! I have run several virus, trojan and all around bad stuff programs directly fron the web in 'safe mode'!

I can get by without fixing this, but It ticks me off!!!

My backup drive does not have this problem!

Thanks, My 'backup' drive does not have this problem, so the problem must be with this O S.

Hope that was just temporary! Not a good idea to have the firewall disabled.
I'm sure you know, that is your first line of defense.

I understand the frustration - I've had connection/communication problems myself a couple of times.

One time the solution was changing my firewall, although I'm hesitant to say which FW was causing the problem 'cause it's a good product. It's just that after a version upgrade, I had problems that I could not fix. Right now I'm using PC Tools Firewall Plus 6.
