Update windows 98 to xp as a dual boot

I am getting a used laptop from a family member with vista on it.
I want xp to be the primary OS.
I don't have an xp disk. I have a 98 disk and a XP upgrade disk.
I have used this before on a new computer but I have never tried a dual boot.
Is it possible to install 98 onto the current computer and then upgrade it?

I believe you mus first create 2 partitions and install Windows XP first. Here's a tip: you do NOT need to install Win98 in order to use the XP upgrade disc. You can boot to the upgrade CD and follow the steps required to do a full install. If XP is already on the drive, you don't need to mess with Win98 at all. If the drive is blank, just start to install Windows XP from the upgrade CD. At some point it will prompt you to insert a qualifying OS to upgrade from, then you pop in the Win98 disc, and continue the install. It will tell you to put the XP disc back in, and you keep on hoing. You don't have to actually install Win98 so you save about an hour.

Thank you for the reply but unfortunately VISTA is already on the computer. It is a gateway and I don't know what kind of disks came with it.

:confused Whaaa?!?!? So I guess the dual boot with Win98 and WinXP is no longer an issue.... I tried.

First you need to see if the laptop with Vista has drivers for XP. Some manufacturers are not providing XP drivers so even if you want that OS, you can't install it.
