I was told of a download Unofficial SP5.1 and now have 231Mb on file.
Does anyone know how to make it run now, or after I've reloaded W2k from the original CD?

Welcome to Major Geeks! From what I can tell, it's a .zip file so it must be extracted (or unzipped) before you can do anything with it. Win2000 doesn't have built-in .zip file support like XP does, so you need to download and install an 'archiving' program if you don't already have one. TUGZip is my personal favorite, and 7zip is popular too. Links are below. I haven't actually downloaded the file, but it seems that after it's been unzipped, it's just a matter of running a setup file..."The Microsoft Windows 2000 Unofficial SP5 interface is very easy to use since it's identical to a normal Windows update setup"... that's a quote from the web. Here's a link to a review of the SP5 for W2K: http://www.softpedia.com/progViewOpinions/13-9-416,.html
Here's links to TUGZip and 7zip (both are free to download and use):
    TUGZip http://www.majorgeeks.com/TUGZip_d4670.html
    7zip http://www.majorgeeks.com/7-Zip_d4603.html
    I hope this helps!

Thanks for a really fast reply and links! It is now unzipped and contains some 20 or more files and folders. I'm only familiar with files needing a double click to open, not 20. Am I looking for one file, you mention "setup", which will activate the whole download, if I put them all in one folder?

Where did you get this unofficial SP5?
The only thing I downloaded, for windows 2000, officially from MS was rollup #1 which were fixes after SP4.

If you could post a screen shot of these files/folders or attach a list or something. I'm not going to download a 230mb file just to figure out how to install it ;) I clicked on the home page link for SP5 that is here at MG, and it went to a forum that will probably qnswer all your questions. If it doesn't, posting your questions there may get you better, more accurate answers. Here's the link http://www.msfn.org/board/win2k-hotstream-topic-continued-t58434.html
It appears that there is also 'Autopatcher2000'. I used AutopatcherXP when it was still in development (but Microsoft strongly 'encouraged' them to stop). It appears that the Unofficial SP5 is mainly for slipstreaming into your Win2000 install CD, where Autopatcher is for updating after the OS is already installed. You can download Autopatcher2000 from here: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/AutoPatcher.shtml It hasn't been updated since August 2007 due to Microsoft's 'encouragement' that I mentioned earlier. The Autopatcher home page no longer has downloads available which leads me to believe that Microsoft was quite forceful in their 'encouraging' of Autopatcher to cease and desist....

Please do not download, it took hours & hours. No, just wanted an idea which file might launch the usp51 download contents titles listed below, excluding Windows readme files:

    shelexe.exe [cdlaunch]
    deploy.cab [WinZip]
    setup.exe [instal applic]
    support.cab [WinZip]
    w2ksp4.sms
    2000rkst.msi
    deploy.cab [WinZip]
    setup.exe [Applic]
    support.cab ]WinZip]
    2000rkst.msi
    pltfm_h_r.bmp
    pltfm_h_r.gif
    w2ksp51.exe [Applic] 220Mb

Have noted rest of your reply.
    Thanks

hmmm SP5 combines 403 hotfixes into a single hotfix - fully automated.
So I went to the forum where the creator posts
    http://www.msfn.org/board/win2k-hotstream-topic-continued-t58434.html
and from the last post, it appears that this SP5 also includes SP4, which I can see from your list.
If you already have SP4, then I suspect a lot of those files are repeats of hotfixes you have installed.

To install it, and possibly all the repeats along with it, I'd probably click on the item that says w2ksp51.exe

    ..... or maybe setup.exe .....

    w2ksp51.exe
The package can be run easily from CD, but can be installed simply by unzipping and running w2ksp51.exe
