I originally posted this as a reply to my previous problem.
It had been suggested to update my drivers to try and fix said problem, and updating my audio drivers caused a new problem, which I was told I should post here, so here goes.

There is a screencap of my audio manager on the previous thread, which I can't seem to upload again (stating I uploaded it before) http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=236230

    Greetings, reaces.

Just took a look through your other thread and didn't see your machine specs - pardon me if I missed it.

We need some more info from you: what's the make and model # of your machine (please include any Service Tag #s)?

Also, please download and run Speccy, a free system information tool.

When the scan completes, click 'File', 'Save as Text file', name the report, and save to an easily found location, such as your Desktop.

Be advised: the report will display your IP Address and Windows Product Key. You may delete this information if you so wish.

Then attach that file to your next post.

Does this give you the information you need?

    Oooo - Alienware! :cool

Yep, that report looks good. Let us study it, and we'll get back to you asap.

Quick question: does your machine have a Dell Service Tag #? If so, please post it.

    Thank you.

I suggest first downloading and installing Driver Sweeper but don't run it yet.

Now download and run your chipset driver and reboot the machine (my thinking here is that somehow the original audio driver update fiasco screwed up the chipset .inf files).

Reboot again, but boot into Safe Mode. Run Driver Sweeper to uninstall all remnants of the Realtek audio. Once finished, reboot into Normal mode and attempt to reload your audio drivers, see if your symptoms have changed.

I tried installing the chipset drivers from the dvd that came with my computer, and it said that my computer does not meet the minimum requirements for the drivers.

I'd post a screenshot but it's in dutch, so it'll probably not be of much help.

Can't seem to edit so I'll go ahead and double-post (oh the humanity!)

Ditto the drivers I get from the dell site.

    Yeah, there's a 10 minute edit cutoff.

    Try the Intel utility.

    The problem still persists.

Also, driver sweeper did not do what it was supposed to, asfar as I could tell.

It didn't fully un-unstill my realtek drivers, it partially uninstalled it, I then uninstalled the drivers fully through programs - Uninstall a program. Also,a fter using driver sweeper to uninstall the realtek drivers, my computer didn't want to open up "my computer", untill I ran the "remove program : realtek drivers" afterwards, which did fully uninstall them.

Now I once again installed the drivers from the cd that came with my pc, and still no audio jack recognition.

Also: my computer sounds slightly different when starting up with the new chipset drivers, guess that's normal?

Grab the software from here at Majorgeeks, if you can, they're much more likely to be crapware (toolbars, etc) free.

Just a left field type of question: have you cleared CMOS on this machine? Your manual shows a 'Clear CMOS' jumper - you might give it a shot.

Question out of ignorance with the intent to learn:

Clearing my CMOS would essentially just clear my BIOS settings, so anything that would be fixed by that would also be fix-able by editing my bios.

But seeing as how I haven't done anything in my bios, other than turn off, then turn back on, the c10 state, in an attempt to fix shogun2, this doesn't seem likely.

(that's what I thought with my very limited geek knowledge, which means I'm probably wrong but hey :p)

Suit yourself. Just seems like with the chipset reinstalls, and since this is onboard audio, a good BIOS flush is in order. I'm going with a version of my signature: 'Eliminate the impossible, and whatever is left (however improbable) must be the truth.'

But, hey - I'm just a working stiff, trying to lend a hand. ;)

I was just trying to work out why it would work, I'm pretty ignorant on most of these subjects and I can't get any better at it unless I ask what's what :p

I was told in the past a BIOS reset should be the last resort, because of the small chance that it does permanent damage (emphasis on small, but somehow I still cant stop thinking about the permanent part :p)

That would be a BIOS flash update - different animal completely, a bad flash can brick a motherboard.

Ok so if I have this right: clearing CMOS = usefull after a chipset update and harmless. Flashing BIOS = can turn your mobo into a very expensive paperweight if it goes wrong.

Yup, clearing or resetting the BIOS only affects the small user area where the settings are stored - this often gets a little buggy.

Not yet, I haven't had much time lately, I still have to try adam's solution and the cmos jumper.
Allthough right now I'm very tempted to just say "**** it" and buy a usb headset.
