I updated a free version of avg on our desktop pc today and let it restart. We realized hours later that the keyboard and mouse won't work now. I've searched to find out about this issue and it seems people have said to restart in safe mode and uninstall. Any suggestions on what to do if we are unable to even tell the computer to start in safe mode?
I don't know what information is needed to answer this question. Please let me know.

How are the keyboard and mouse connected? USB, PS/2, Wireless?

They are connected by usb. My husband said it must have deleted the drivers for them. He tried to use the drivers and utilities disc to get it fixed and it didn't help. He was unable to do anything.

Have you tried plugging them in a different USB port? Also do you see any lights on the keybord like when you press CAPS lock or NUM lock or if the mouse has a visible laser light does it light up when plugged in?

He did try a different USB port for the mouse, but it made not difference. The mouse does have the laser light on, however, the keyboard lights are not lit up. I just tried moving it to a different port and it didn't make a difference.

It may be coincidence that this happened when you updated AVG.
Can you go into the BIOS set-up and ensure USB keyboard & mouse support are enabled?

Goldenskull I can't follow the rules

If the USB ports are not working you will need to get your self a keboard that has a PS/2 connection to use in BIOS if the USB is not enabled in bios they will not work untill they are turned on in bios.

You can go to like target or best bye and get like a Fold out plastic keyboard that has both useb and ps/2 connections.

They should only cost like 10 to 20$ at retail stores.Or see if any of your friends or nabors has a keyboard that has a PS/2 connection.

Best to find out first if the computer even has one or two PS/2 ports. Newer computers do not have them, only USB ports.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I will look into trying a different keyboard and see if that will help us out. I don't think we can make the computer do anything without the keyboard or mouse working. I'm open to suggestions if someone knows a way to make it cooperate without either.

Sometimes a keyboard will allow you to get into the BIOS, even if it doesn't function in Windows.
When the computer first boots up it will tell you what to press to enter setup. See if you can get into the setup. It probably will not work the first time because till you see the proper key, it will be too late and windows will start to boot. Reboot and try to enter setup.
Once in, see if USB is enabled and what appears for input devices like keyboard and mouse. You use the arrow and tab keys to maneuver in setup; the mouse never works in there.

I was able to hit F2 and look at all the info. All USB settings are on. It does show a keyboard error under the event log. The type is a POST error. Where do I go from here?

Under boot sequence it has USB device listed, but next to it s a "(not present)". Is this something related or not?

Thank you all for the help and suggestions. The computer is on its way to a computer guy who will hopefully get this figured out. My husband did not want to wait any longer to get it figured out.

Could you pop back and let us know what it was as this may help someone else in the future, thanks.

The computer guy found a virus, but couldn't tell exactly what caused it. He saved our files and had to reinstall Windows. We pretty much started from scratch reinstalling eveything, but at least we didn't lose our stuff. Thank you all for your suggestions and help. Sorry for the slow update.

I had similar issue like thing...
It just so happened that I have Ubuntu live CD ready to use to back up my files, then I started troubleshooting my computer by scanning my computer with boot time Kaspersky. Worked like a charm.
