Updated Chipset BIOS - now how no USB!

    Hi
I recently reinstalled XP on my Dell 8400 and updated the chipset bios after other drivers (which I've now learnt should have been done first).

When it was 80% through the update, the computer automatically restarted and since then once XP loads, nothing connected to the USB ports work which is an issue as both my mouse and keyboard are USB.

The keyboard does work at startup - so I can enter BIOS etc.

I'd happily reinstall XP to start over but the reinstallation disk doesn't work from boot, although it's set to check the CD in the bios settings. When I did the reinstallation I could only get the disk to work from within XP. Perhaps it's a disk from another Dell version?

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    g'day broadhat

in your bios set up your cd rom should be set to boot first. have you tried to uninstall the usb drivers form the device manager first before you reinstall your os once you have uninstalled the drivers restart the computer and windows will search for the drivers so have the windows cd ready in case it is required

    Hi

The BIOS is set to check the CD first, it doesn't detect the disk from boot, only when windows has loaded.

But the only interface devices I have are USB, meaning once XP has loaded, my keyboard and mouse don't work...

    Cheers

  4. Have you chcked in the BIOS that the USB ports are not disabled? This may be in the security tab under device security.

Now if they are disabled that might be your problem if not then we have a problem to get around here :)

Please get back to us once you have give this a check :)

    Just to confirm both settings:

    Boot sequence:
    1 Onboard or USB CD-Rom
    2 Onboard SATA hard drive

    USB Controller: On

Is there any reason why the reinstallation disk would be recognised from within Windows (where it allowed me to do a full reinstallation) but not from DOS?

    Cheers

Best way round this might be to buy a PS/2 mouse and keyboard - seems the simplest solution.

I'll reinstall XP again but I'll start another thread as I've a couple of questions on that too ;)

Thanks for the help so far!
