Windows Vista updated IE 7 to IE 8. Also, Updated SP2 this morning. When I open IE 8, it hangs and won't load. Rebooted, and no help. :cry

I am considering, going into add & remove programs, and deleting IE8. Hopefully, this will take me back to IE 7? :confused This is a Compaq running Vista OS..... Grrrrrr.........

PS: I could open Google Chrome and use that, but not IE 8.

I have a Compaq Presario notebook PC running Vista Home Premium. I installed SP2 some months ago but held off on IE8 until 2 or 3 weeks ago. IE8 is working OK for me, although I have Firefox set as my default browser.

I think removing IE8 would be worth a try for you. That should take you back to IE7. You could try installing IE8 again, but first use IE7 for awhile to verify it's working OK.

Hi usafveteran, this is a desktop, and IE 7 was working fine. It had downloaded the IE8 update, along with SP2 and installed this morning. If I go into add & remove programs, and delete IE8, it should revert back to IE7, but would that do anything with the SP2?:confused

Good question. I'm inclined to think it wouldn't affect all the other updating that took place with SP2 but I'm not 100% sure about that. If you want, wait for some other opinions; should be some forthcoming, I'd think.

Should be OK. One program shouldn't mess with another, especially when used for different purposes.

I removed the IE8 update, and that is all, rebooted, and am back to IE7, and working like a charm. However, there is still the darn icon in the system tray, telling me IE 8 is ready to be installed. Didn't bother the SP ;)

Think I will need to go into windows update, to stop that from coming in? Could be a problem, if she keeps seeing that, and clicks OK like I did. IE 8 just didn't even load. Anothr Grrrrr day! But, IE7 is doing fine, so I will see if I can find a way to block IE8 form, the updates. Thanks for the help ;)

IE8 mostly works fine on my Vista HP SP2 except I've had to uninstall the IE7Pro addin I was so fond of. Try again in a day or two.

Hi Earthling! I may try that, but this is a Compaq Home desktop. I just ran maintanance, and allowed it to install the updates, and rebooted more times than I care to admit LOL and it just wouldn't load. I double clicked onto it, and it would just hang. No biggie, 7 worked fine before, and is still working fine now, so I may try another time..

Could only "hide" the update, as Vista won't let me in the update sight rolleyes Are we having fun yet? LOL

Hi Mada_Milty, I already did try the safe-mode, with no add-ons approach, and it still didn't load. "Internet Explorer is not responding" was all I got no matter what I did...

May have just been a bad download, so I will try it again another day. Plus, I use IE 7 on my XP. :)

I am glad it works for you. My friend owns the Compaq desktop, and she likes IE 7 also. May have something to do with the DUN, but I am not sure, but we are both on the same DUN. IE8 had installed first, then the SP2, then the .NET framework.

I am not going to be too much concerned over it at this point. IE7 worked fine, both before and after, so I just removed the IE8 update, and reverted back to IE 7. I , myself, like 7 too. :)

I have seen a number of problems with IE8, and removing it solved.

However, I have also discovered that when you first install IE8, upon starting IE, you are taken to a series of menu options, accelerators, add-ons, filters, etc., can't remember them all cause I don't pay attention. But if you just decline or say NO to any and all options/features, then IE8 works just fine! I have had 100% success with this method. And I've upgraded at least 20 computers, with different OS's, with this method.

Just my 2 pennies worth. :wave:wave:wave

Good point, brandypeppy. I believe all those add-ons can be accessed anytime by going to Tools, Internet Options, Programs (tab), and clicking the button for Manage add-ons.

HI Brandy, I never got that screen at all: a series of menu options, accelerators, add-ons, filters, etc., I tried it in Safe mode, and with no add-ons, but nothing made any difference... It isn't mine, it is my friends computer, and I may try it another time, but just not now. It was a bear to work with. She has Vista, and I use XP. Thanks for your 2 cents, altho I think it should be 10 cents!! :-D

usafveteran, yup, tried that too. No difference. I may try it again another time, but after yesterday, I'll wait a while.;)

You mean when you install, reboot I believe, then click on IE, you don't get menus of options???:confused

I've seen this everytime, on XP AND Vista. Can't remember if I've done any 7's though.

Sometimes it has taken a minute or two to pop up after starting it, but I have got that ALL the time.

I don't think it's the part of the country I live??

Boy, now you got me :confused:confused:confused:wave:wave

Hi Brandy, Nope, sure did NOT get that. And yes, I did wait rolleyes and wait rolleyes after 2 hours, I decided to take it back to IE 7. I don't think IE 8 was very nice at all:p Gave me a few gray hairs!rolleyes

Heheh... this thread won't die. :-D

I believe that what is on the back of everyone's minds is that if a new install of IE8 failed, even in no add-ons mode, it would indicate a deeper issue on your system. I mean, it's not like you got a bad copy of the installer. (You mention a bad download, but I don't think it would run/install at all if it were really a corrupted file. It usually needs to be intact for that!)

IE8 really is a good improvement over IE7, but not enough to beat your head over.
