Updates at every shutdown...does that make sense?

Lately, I have noticed that whenever I shutdown my computer there is an update available and the system displays the reminder regarding don't power off message.

The message also appears after I have opted out of Microsoft updates. These strange occurrences have gotten me to wonder whether there is something problematic going on. I run both SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes (license version) upon boot as well as a few other times but they don't indicate anything sinister is lurking or going on.

Is it possible that Microsoft is updating something everyday?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and advice.

    Hi Kiholo,

This sounds like a particular update(s) failing to properly install -- Please seek help on this particular problem at the Software forum. Provide information such as:
    • Which KB update is failing?
    • Which operating system are you using?

My personal thoughts are that the pending.xml files in winsxs folder (only applies if you are using WinVista or Win7) need to be removed and you need to flush any pending updates for install, then retry.

To answer your question: No, Microsoft doesn't put out new updates everyday. source: Fast Facts About Microsoft Update

You mentioned both SAS and MBAM logs were clean. I honestly do not think malware is the issue here. It is more of a software issue.

    Thisisu,

My system is running XP Pro SP3.

As I mentioned, each time I shutdown something loads or updates. When I turn on, there is a pop up which asks how do I want to do updates. I select custom and it shows that a Windows Malicious Software Removal tool-August 2011 (KB890830). I have done this once or twice now but still same results.

OK, I will pursue further assistance in the SOFTWARE forum. Do I need to start a new thread or will this one be moved?

    Thanks
