Hi, can someone give me some help/advice on how I would go about updating my BIOS? I have a asus M2V and am looking yo update the BIAS version. I have downloaded a file from a Asus website that contains the following files...

    "AFUDOS.exe" and "M2V-ASUS-2101.ROM"

Now I am not at all sure on what I am doing so a little help and guidance wouldn't go a miss, if possible :)

    Thanks, Luke

OK, since you said you don't know what you're doing, is there a specific reason why you want to flash your BIOS? Unless there's something that an update will fix, it's best to leave things alone. For example, the only time I ever flashed was when I was replacing my single core CPU to a dual core and I had to flash. My motto regarding BIOS flashing is 'if it ain't broke...don't fix it.' ;)

    Thank you for response.

I have had problems with this machine and the graphics card before, I had made a few posts about my computer going into standby and not being able to get it out etc and the monitor just going off. Well it still does it once the graphics card gets the latest drivers. I am still getting a nvlddmkm.sys blue screen error. Now I googled this a bit and someone somewhere mentioned about updating the BIOS could fix the issue. I figured it was worth a shot because it is becoming quite tedious when my monitor just shuts itself down and a few seconds later the blue screen comes up with nvlddmkm.sys error.

Unless there is another fix for this I am out of ideas, well apart from getting a new graphics card. Perhaps you, or someone else could point me in the direction of a decent graphics card? Nothing too flash as I don't play high spec games but something above board? The current one if I am not mistaken is a Nvidia Geforce 9800GT

OK, fair enough though you could read the change logs first between the next update from your current rev # and see if anything about nVidia cards is mentioned. Take a look here for some instructions on how-to though they are quite technical. If ya need help with that then just holler.

Oh, I have a pair of 9800GT's in my other machine and think they are great. Have you checked out nVidia's forums yet? They have some threads on your issue there.

    I'm out for tonight.:tired

That mobo has EzFlash which I used on my board. Burn the rom to a CD or copy it to a flash drive. In the bios you should see an option that says EZ Flash or something similar to it. When you open it then select the rom file and it will ask you to confirm.

    Hope that helps you.

Hey, I tried that suggestion with EZ Flash but when I was in my BIOS I had no EZ Flash option or anything similar :( .....

Are you sure your motherboard is a M2V? If you are sure and don't see the option it looks like your going to have to do it though DOS.

    Good luck

I am as sure as the screenshot below suggests....

If I am going to have to go through DOS like you suggest I am going to need some help with that too as again I have no idea what to do with it. However, I do NOT have a floppy drive on this computer, I can only assume that is going to prove a problem?

    Thanks, Luke

IF you don't have a floppy drive you can make a bootable CD or flash drive.

Ok that is great :) But like I said. I have zero idea on this will need a great amount of help to get through it ....

    Thanks again, Luke

I did a google search on "nvlddmkm.sys blue screen error", checked the first 4 or 5 posts and personally did not find reference to flashing BIOS as a solution.

Found many other possible solutions though, appears to be a problem with Vista and this graphics card.

Have you already worked through these other possible solutions? Some looked promising, although none were 100% of the time successful.

Hi, thank you for your response and time to quickly look for me. Did you come accros this fix?

    "- Go in your bios.
    - Set your memory freq to 666mhz. note: 333mhz if your motherboard sets the DDR timing and not the DDR2 (you may have to set the freq in "unlinked mode" to do this.)
    - Enjoy"

I have not tried that 1 if you came across it too and were meaning this. If you have some others let me know and I will try anything I can. I have tried a few in the past and got nowhere in the end. I am running Windows 7 btw, just so you know.

I cannot remember where I read about updating the BIOS but I am certain I cam across it as I would of never thought about it myself since I wouldnt of had a clue about doing it lol.

    Thanks, Luke

    I didn't see that one. Here's some links I found relevant;

I don't normally like to answer questions here with links, known as page slapping in some circles.

But it seemed to me that there were a lot of problems with what you have and, at this point anyway, flashing the BIOS should be tried last, or close to it.

In all the problems I've worked on with computers, I've never once had to do that nor found it as a solution. That certainly doesn't mean that isn't the correct answer however. But some of the solutions in these links are fairly easy to perform.

    Best Luck!

Hi again, thanks for the time taken again to respond :)

Most of them threads are what I have seen before, basically renaming the old nvlddmkm.sys to nvlddmkm.sys.old and reinstalling newer drivers. Well what I have done is, renamed that file to nvlddmkm.sys.old , removed the drivers that Windows had installed, as Windows 7 does. I then went to the Nvidia website and got the newest drivers from their site, as I have read somewhere that the drivers Windows automatically gets you are not always the up to date ones the manufacturers have on there homepage. I have not had time to fully test out if this helps yet as I ain't been on my desktop for the amount of time to check it out. I will try it out tomorrow, run it for 48 hours doing day to day activities I normally do and see what happens.

For example, I was getting this error when using Teamviewer application and viewing another persons computer and vice versa.

If you picked up any other solutions while looking through them threads please mention them :)

Also as a side note, do you, or anybody else have any recommendations for another graphics card, not top of the range but good enough?

    Thanks again, Luke

Hi, thought it would be best to make a post and thank all who commented and give some helpful tips and advice :) My computer seems to be fine and thankfully has NOT gave a blue screen of death once :D

I guess my advice would be always download drivers from manufacturers site and NOT rely on Windows 7 to get them for you lol.

    Many thanks to all :)

Just remember to ALWAYS be sure of what you are doing when dealing with the BIOS.
Just like the Registry, one mistake and you have a toasted PC.
