I'm getting ready to install a new second HD.. I've been told I should update my bios or there could be problems getting the new drive recognized and other issues with size, because its a 300GB. Can anyone explain how I go about this update and also give me any pointers on problems that I could run into? I'd appreciate any help. ;)

    THANKS!
    Lori

it should be fairly easy to update your bios. for starters we need to know some info about your computer.

All that is involved in a bios update is to create a boot disk, put the update on the disk, boot the computer with the disk in the drive and this will begin the installation. There is a bit more to it but we can get to that later.

if you have a dell pc then go here and enter your service tag or computer make and they should supply you with driver updates and bios updates etc.

edit: in the downloads section the update you are looking for is under flash bios update and there are usually two downloads floppy and unpacked . select the first one "floppy"

If you aren't sure of the specs...then download this program called "Everest" from here...

    http://majorgeeks.com/EVEREST_Home_Edition_d4181.html

Install and run...then post the results!! Do not copy and paste the entire log...it is entirely more info then needed!! Just post the following!!

    1) Motherboard make and model
    2) Drives installed in the system
    3) CPU make and model
    4) Memory(s) make(s) and model(s)
    5) Graphic card

Then with that information, someone can research (unless someone already knows, which is possible) your situation...and then go from there!!

Ok, question.. what's this mean? and how/where do i find/change it?

NOTE: Before updating the BIOS on the IntelĀ® Desktop Board, manually record all BIOS settings that have been changed (from default) so they can be restored after completing the BIOS update.

thats just for people who have manually altered the bios to suit their own needs. If you havent altered any of these in the past there is no need to save anything.

The bios settings are found when you hit the delete key when the computer is booting. It is delete for my computer anyway.

Usually when the computer is booting a screen will appear and somewhere on that screen it will say "Press Del to enter setup" or something simular.

By the way....if you are not too firmiliar with flashing a bios...then the easy way is to use the "Express Bios update"...not the one for doing from DOS!!

Any questions...just ask...flashing a bios is not something for the faint hearted!!! Not that i'm trying to scare you...but just to let you know!!

Its not that big of a deal rogvalcox. Ive never found bios updates to be anyway frustrating even when i was just starting out with computers.
