    Greetings,
    As the title suggests.
I mounted the windows 10 1903 disk on the desktop of the laptop.
I ran the exe as administrator. It all goes off to plan.
Slow but working updates found and system restarts
    slowly the updates are updating.
Windows must not be switched off ...
It rebooted into searching for updates again.. 1% 2%.........
After a couple of hours an error arrives saying that it is undoing the changes.

I think I should have made a USB stick and opened the exe file from it.
Apologies Microsoft. I should have tried it that way.

Thanks I will have a look at that.
The laptop is not with me so I don't think I can do anything about it for now...

Having looked. I want to say bean there done that.
But all that was many hours ago.

I will try the USB stick next time.

What size is the hard drive in the laptop?
Some laptops come with hd that are too small for an update so a clean install must be performed.

    It is 1000GB. almost empty.
A clean install is certainly the easiest way to go but I would really like to update.
My plan is to clone the disk onto it on to a 125GB SSD drive but I left my screwdriver behind...

Windows 10 1903/1909 certainly does not like being upgraded and prefers a clean install. Roughly 30-40% of the upgrades I have completed end up in a complete format due to driver and software issues, or just plain old strange happenings.

My personal opinion? A clean install is a no-brainer. You could split yourself some partitions, install clean then grab your documents later and purge the old partition.

Perhaps a 2 year "upgrade" is too much. You are trying to go from 1703 to 1903.

Perhaps a reinstall is the only option.
    Many thanks,

At work, I have upgraded multiple PCs to Windows 10 v1903 and never had an issue with it. My 2 cents' worth....

    Which process did you use?

Sometimes I used the Windows 10 Update Assistant, and other times I used the built-in Windows Update (Microsoft actually lets you choose if/when to upgrade to v1903 instead of force-feeding it to you like previous updates).

Thank you Mr K. My problem might be that the original version of Win10 was 2 years old.
    I haven't given up...
    Best wishes and thank you,

In that case, use the Windows 10 Update Assistant. It will either bump your PC up to v1903 or say that you have to update to an intermediate version first.

If you are using Home or Pro, then support ended in 2018. That might be why you have issues upgrading.

It is my Mother's laptop and I just didn't get to update it in time. I shall probably reinstall 1903 onto it.
    She prefers her iphone.
    Thank you for the help.
