Updating old laptop HELP

Hi

I have a old compaq presario 1622. When I bought this used it had windows 98 on it. Something happened and I had to reload it. Well my best friend just did away with her old computer and gave me windows 98 se. Problem is, it keeps telling me that I need windows 98 upgrade. Anyway around that or do I just have to give these disk back to her?

If you use F-disk/reformat, then you can load win98se (must remove old win 98)

 

oops forgot to add that it originally came with windows 95. That is what is in it right now sorry

 

Doesent matter 95 or 98, F-disk whipe HDD reformat and then you will be able to load your full version of 98se

My copy of 98se came with 98se boot disk, maybe your friend has that too!

thanks for all the help, now it is giving me this error

windows protection error. Need to restart your computer

C:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd

missing unable to load..

Any ideas?

So how far did you get, or what have you done?

I did google on "windows protection error" lots of stuff came up.

Just wanted to pop in and say thanks for your help. I have not been able to fix it yet as I messed up my main computer, but will holler at you if I need more help if that is okay.

You can download a 98se boot disk from here:
http://www.24by7.ca/files/boot98se.exe

Once you make it, boot from the floppy and fun FDISK like ASUS suggested and then you can do a clean install of 98se.
