Updating to Windows 7

    I have windows xp and i popped in my windows 7 disc and it wont show up. i tried to boot from it and it says searching for boot record then boots normally ill try to put it in while xp is on and nothing will happen could you help me?

    Windows 7 is usually on a DVD.

    Paradoxically enough I just fixed a Dell Dimension 8200, the BIOS boot option was for CDROM yet it had a DVD drive. Who'd a thunk it :)

    Its a legacy phrase thats still left, can be a CDROM or DVD, called the same thing in the BIOS (generally ATAPI-CDROM), so your orginal comment and steps where fine.

    I do agree with your Clean Install as it would be best, too many old files from XP that could cause issues, and problems with stable install, although its as usual, will work for some but may not for others.


    Would be running the Upgrade Advisor first to check on the current XP install any potential areas of concern be they software or drivers, you may encounter with Windows 7.

    okay problem solved i have a cd player and the disk is a dvd so i just need to buy and instal a dvd drive.
