    Looking for advice: at present using Windows ME but want to upgrade to.......? confused

    We need more info: like your PC specs (CPU, how much RAM, type of RAM, hard drive size, video card, motherboard make/model/features, etc...) would be very helpful. We can't really advise on how or what to ugrade w/o some specific information on what we have to work with. Use a program like Everest or AIDA to get all the PC's info, post it here, and we'll do our best to help you out. Both Everest and AIDA are free downloads from MajorGeeks...

    Now have a 229kb report.
    Do I cut and paste it? Or is there another way to post the info?
    Is there any info I could give about my PC which would make it vunerable?

    Your system would be just capable of running WindowsXP. The processor is plenty fast enough. You can get some bargains on OEM full XP disks now that Vista is out. You need to also 'buy' one piece of hardware to satisfy the conditions of the OEM license.

    However I would not recommend upgrading this pc. The memory is an obsolete type called RAMBUS or RIMM. Further at 256MB it is at the minimum required for Windows XP. The 256 is made up of two 128 modules and you would need to replace both to increase the memory as they must be installed in matched pairs. Unfortunately RAMBUS modules are extremely expensive, a pair of 256 modules would cost more than the pc is worth. This is a common problem with pcs of this era.

    An upgrade is going to cost £200+. You can get a replacement base unit for less than this, including Windows XP, a faster processor and more memory. You could use its network capabilities to keep the current unit going and continue to use the CD writers.

    Yep, a bit much on the TMI front. Are you thinking of hardware or software? For your mix of hardware your windows is matched pretty well.

    I'm a fan of Win98SE, as much as I can be a fan of MS, I've never been sure why ME was written. Win98 was buggy, M$ polished it up on Win98SE to the point it was pretty good, then lost ground when they published ME (it has some new bugs).

    The key question is what are you wanting to do? What can you not do with your computer that you want to do? My personal bugaboo has been hard disk sizes, since I like to make and edit DVD videos. I also like to build my personal machines from the ground up, which means I do hardware upgrades in small increments. Win98SE has an upper limit of 137Gig on hard disks, so I've been dabbling in XP.

    I'm not familiar enough with your video card to know what its limits are, but modern games require a late model video card, and more lately, XP.

    So what are you trying to do with your computer?

    BTW, when you want to list hardware, just focus on the basics. Motherboard and chipset may be needed, but I would wait until it is asked for. For example, a description of my computer would be something like:

    Athlon 2400+ XP CPU
    1 Gig DDR 4000 RAM
    160 Gig HD (partitioned to 135 Gig), ATA 133
    Windows 98SE
    DVD CDRW drive (flaky, but keeps the new drive from wearing out)
    DVD RW dual layer drive.
    Radeon AIW 8500 video card.

    Anyone reading the above would have a very good idea of where my computers limits are. A lot of accessories, like USB, are assumed, and defined to a large extent by the OS.

    Made me think now!! I am not over ambitious. I mainly use it for access to Internet, e-mailing, wordprocessing. In daily use though.

    I have downloaded photos from digital camera but have yet to do anything with them.

    I think I probably have a lot of memory used up with things no longer needed i.e. aol folders which are obsolete as I use Blueyonder now (under Internet Options,Connections, Dial up and Virtual Private Network Settings... I still have AOL dialler....don't understand why), also PCmightymax v9 (whatever that is!!!!) etc

    Also have a problem regarding restore facility.......it doesn't!

    Norton Antivirus tells me about it but doesn't seem to be able to get rid of it for me!!!

    Also Microsoft said they would not be supporting Windows ME anymore so thought that may be a problem for the future.

    :cry :cry :cry a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. I have used this PC and Windows ME for over 5 years now and all my sins are coming home to roost. If in doubt I leave it alone in case I wipe something important off :eek:

    If that's all you do then I wouldn't upgrade even if you could find the parts, it's just not worth the money as you would get minimal performance increase when running XP. Even if you're an expert typist, your system will not slow you down. If you you really want to upgrade then the best thing to do would be to buy a new system. Low end rigs these days can handle XP with ease. Set a budget and see what the guys say.

    I use my computer for my digital cameras too. That is another thing hard disk storage is good for. I have to go with the consensus, I wouldn't worry about upgrades until you actually need them. I notice you have a CDRW, which is the only other accessory I would consider necessary for digital photography, CD's being cheaper than hard disk space many time.

    They make some neat external SD memory card to USB readers nowdays, for not too much money. Given my limited knowledge of currencies I suspect it would be under 5 pounds (or $8 american). I have several, one for each computer and one for my camera bag.

    As for word processing, any computer can do that well. My old Commodore 128 has a decent word processor w/ spell checking that I still occasionally use.

    Where you are most likely to start feeling the itch is with games, and there are a lot of excellent old games out there. Just be aware that, if you get a game and can't get it to work, it will most likely be your video card. That is where I got burned a while back.
