I started this thread in the software forum, but we weren’t able to resolve it there.

Computer is a Compaq Presario Model #GC662AA ABA SR5113WM, 64 bit X2 dual core 3600. Motherboard is an M2N68-LA (ASUTEK) IVY 1.01.

I finally upgraded from Win7 to Win10 only to find that I have no audio to my speakers or to my headphones. The computer wants to use PlayOn Virtual Audio Device but that doesn't work. The motherboard has an onboard Realtek High Definition Audio Device, but that doesn’t show up in the Device Manager.

This is what I’ve done so far:

Ensured that my speakers were set as the default device.

    Launched the "Device Manager."

Expanded the "Sound, video and game controllers" section.

Looked for an entry called "Realtek High Definition Audio.” Not found.

Went to the “Action” button at the top of the screen and to "load legacy devices."

Found the Realtek device and attempted to load it

Crashed the system with a blue screen and a message telling me that the PC had a problem and had to restart. It restarted but still no sound to my speakers or headphones. Did this twice.

Question: Can I get a different sound card that will work with this PlayOn driver? Different speakers? A combination?

    FYI the crash also said
Stop Code: System thread extension not handled
    What failed: RTKVHDA.sys

I went to RealTek and got a newer driver and installed it. Enabled it and it crashed with a Code 10.

    Anybody recommend a new motherboard?

Well, I got a hardware fix. I hooked up a 21" TV to the graphics card via an HDMI cable, and got sound and video. Hooked my computer speakers up to the TV headphone jack and the sound is good. So the PlayOn virtual sound device routes the sound through the HDMI and not through the mini-jack ports.
I might get a better TV to do this with, as you have to be looking straight at the screen or the video looks weird, but small TVs are pretty cheap (if you can find them).
