upgrade from win98?

My old computer runs on win98. I want to step up. What is your suggested opperating system for me? Win98 is the most reliable opperating system as far as I know. That is why I have kept it for so long. What do you geeks suggest for me? You folks have always been good to me. Always trust Major Geeks.

You could try to switch your old system to Ubuntu, since only Vista is available in retail now and no other previous OS from Microsoft. But Ubuntu might also be very slow on certain older systems.

If it works reliably, as you say it is, why bother upgrading?

If you are planning on using your present computer, a lot would depend on its specs! More information about the computer is necessary before making a recommendation!

Even Ubuntu would probably bring a '98 system to its knees these days. I'd start saving up for a Intel Core2 Duo or AMD X2 system at the least if you want to run anything like Vista on there or even XP, which needs a minimum of 512MB RAM or better at 1GB RAM. Time to bite the bullet. Don't forget, you may have to upgrade your software($) and/or peripherals(more $).

If it were me, I'd remove the 98 computer from the internet. You don't need to worry about security programs. Continue to use the old computer for those programs you are used to using.

Rather than spend the money for a version of Windows, which may or may not install on that computer, put that money towards a new (for you) computer. You could buy a refurbed XP or a new Vista computer with more speed and RAM. Surf safely on it and when you get upset with the new operating system, fire up your trusty 98 and do some work or play games.
