Upgrade or new?

I have an older Compaq Presario desktop (model 5BW220, built in 2000). It came with a Celeron 633mhz processor running Windows ME, a 15MB hard drive, and 64K SD RAM. I've added a second HDD (IBM 80GB, 7200rpm, 8MB buffer), more memory (256K), CD burner, wireless keyboard and mouse and some other peripherals. Anyways, I'm getting a DVD burner for Xmas and the specs say it needs more processor than I have (the box says P3, 800mhz minimum) and I'm wondering whether I should upgrade or buy a new computer. The upgrades I'm considering are a new CPU, motherboard, and memory. I've been told that an AMD processor would work with my existing power supply. Is this the case, and would I need to go to DDR and chuck the SD RAM that I bought? Money is an issue here. I'd appreciate any advice you can offer.

You can buy a new lower end computer for less than it would cost to upgrade your configuration. I'm sure that some will disagree with me on this, but with a new computer, you will get a newer MB, more advanced features that are supported, support for a faster memory type with a newer bios, etc.

The only thing that you have to decide is which is more important to you, the thrill of doing it your self, or having someone else do it for you with a new computer. Alsmost forgot - Welcome to MajorGeeks :)

    I agree with you.

If you where to upgrade, I would suggest getting a new PSU anyway, if it is an older unit it might not give you the juice you need to run at any level of stability (as I found out)

Anyways, I think that getting a new computer would be the best idea, I know of a couple in the places where you can customise what you want and I am sure there are tonnes in the US, so you wouldnt need to pay for a DVD burner in the price...

As said before, I am sure there will be some who dissagree...

-All the best and welcome to MG

Try looking up some "barebones" systems. You can find some great deals. You will get a new case, MB, PSU & sometimes other parts. You can easily add your existing parts. I bought one from TigerDirect a while back. All I had to add was some memory & a video card. It came with a case, 350watt PSU, Soyo MB and an AMD 1800+.

Thanks for the hospitality and the advice. I have to say that I'm a bit surprised, having expected the advice to run more along the 'upgrade' line. But I think you're right; a new comp would give me a lot more (including support and a warranty) for not much more money.
