Hello. I read an article somewhere, either in web user or computer active, about upgrading to windows 10 from windows 7 and bypassing the charge etc from microsoft ?

I keep useful articles like this, but I cant find this one. It was probably about 12-18 months ago. Which makes me wonder if it was here or another forum.

Can anybody help with this advice please.

I've done in-place upgrades from Windows 7 to 10, and I've done from-scratch Windows 10 installations using a Windows 7 license key to activate. They still work fine despite Microsoft's cut-off date (which they never enforced).

If for some strange reason your existing license key doesn't work, read this how-to:

I've bought Windows 10 license keys for $15 U.S., and they activated fine.

Your Windows license/product key is tied to the motherboard so as long as your W7 license is activated and legit you can upgrade using the Media Creation Tool. Click the "Update now" button to download the update tool.

As always be sure you backup any personal files just in case.

It says you need an 8gb flash drive to download windows 10. Is this right and do you need anything else. Because until October I have a 15gb monthly cap !!!

The Windows 10 installer is a little too big to fit on a 4-gig flash drive, and the next step up is 8 gigs. The only other thing that you need to do is to back up your data files before starting. Never perform an upgrade of this magnitude without having a good data backup first.

IIRC the Media Creation Tool runs from your computers hard drive. Click the "Update now" button to download the update tool.

The other option is the ISO and you need a flash drive to use that.

should I download it to my hard disk then transfer it to a flash drive and install from the flash drive ?

It will run without a flash drive. Just download the tool and run it like any other software. Download from this page by selecting the first option.

What Form factor is your RAM? Open Task Manager and click the Performance tab then select Memory and look at the description. I think it will either be SODIMM or DIMM. After getting the correct form factor then you can use the Crucial website https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/advisor for various options. Just be sure you select the right form factor. Or what I did recently was search Amazon for the computer model + ram. Example HP Pavilion g7-2217cl ram

The May update (1903) has been fixed for most users with a recent update. It still won't install on some systems though without doing a clean install with the ISO but if it does install through the update tool or through Windows Update then most users should be good to go.

Speccy shows that you have an ASUS H81M-Plus motherboard. It has 2 DIMM slots and supports a maximum of 16GB of DDR3 memory. We need more information to proceed:
    • How much total memory do you want? You currently have 4GB; it would be easy to add another 4GB DIMM and bump your PC up to 8GB.
    • What country do you live in? This determines your vendor choices.
    • Now for the technical question: Is your current memory DDR3 or DDR3L? The "L" stands for "low voltage". Regular DDR3 runs at 1.35V; low-voltage DDR3 runs at 1.2V. You can't mix the two kinds in the same computer. Here's how to find out what you have without opening the computer:
    1. Download a copy of CPU-Z and install it.
    2. Run CPU-Z.
    3. Click on the "SPD" tab.
    4. If no details are displayed, click on the "Memory Slot Selection" pull-down and choose the other slot.
    5. Take a screen capture of the window and post that here.

I am in the UK. Another 4gb would do, just so windows 10 runs properly. I don't play games anymore...although I MIGHT start watching sport or something on it when my current broadband cap is finished in October and I go unlimited broadband.

ah, got you. I have stopped downloading all the updates for windows 7 as one of them stopped it working and I had to do a system restore a few months ago. I was pointed to a site where you can wait for feedback and select the "good" ones later but tbh I haven't looked through them yet, I just use MSE and the security updates as I get them.

I don't know if this is good practice or not, or how risky it is, but it peed me off when an update from microsoft stopped my computer from working.

Plus....its been pointed out to me that I really need to go onto unlimited broadband to do this, which I will do in October when my capped package with BT is finished.

Here's what I got from the CPU-Z info:

    Kingston 4GB DIMM
    Model # KVR1333D3N91G
    Part # 9905474-060.A00LF
    DDR3-1333
    PC3-10600

It's an early production model because it runs at 1.5V instead of 1.35V. I didn't mention that possibility earlier because I haven't seen those DIMMs in ages (yours was manufactured in January 2014). This complicates things a bit.

If you want to keep the DIMM that you have, then you need to find another 1.5V DIMM to go with it. Your local computer shop might have one of these in their used kit collection. I wouldn't pay more than £15 for one. I also checked ebay.co.uk, but most of what I found are server DIMMs (the model number has an "R" in it, the description says "REG" or "ECC"), and they aren't compatible with your motherboard.

The alternative is to remove your existing DIMM and install two matching DIMMs. If you take this route, you have more options since the DIMMs are a matched set. I spotted an eBay seller offering "8GB (2x4GB) Corsair memory DDR3 1333MHz" for £30 + £2.40 postage. amazon.co.uk has some possibilities in the same price range.

    Notes:

    • Ignore any memory modules that are labeled "SO-DIMM" or "SODIMM". Those are "small outline" DIMMs, commonly used in laptops.
    • Whomever you buy from, make sure they have a return policy in case the DIMM(s) turn out to be defective or incompatible.

FYI: DDR3 default voltage is 1.5v, though most will be fine at 1.35-1.65v and the best DDR3 ( and DDR3L, 1.35v default) will cope with ~1.25-1.75v (DDR4L is 1.2v default).

For specifics on RAM tested as compatible on that 'board, see the Memory/Device Support tab for .pdf downloads: https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/H81MPLUS/HelpDesk_QVL/
