    I have just picked up a E-Machine....E-Tower 667 combi
    Genuine Intel
    Intel (r)Celeron(tm) processor
    255.0 mb ram
It has Microsoft windows Me ,would it be possible to upgrade (format) it to Xp

It should. I had an old PC with a 500mHz CPU and 192 MB memory and ran XP on it. It was never particularly fast but it was functional for email, websurfing and word processing. Had I used Blackviper's XP configuration information to disable unneeded services and such, it might have been better.

Cheers for that I just wondered if the motherboard and the rest were configured for a e-machine only

Well, yes, it is, but that doesn't mean it won't run Windows XP. You seem to be mixing hardware and software issues here.

Ideally, adding some memory would be good if you want to run Windows XP, but I see your computer does not suport more than 256MB. But you can do it with 256MB, as Just Playin said.

Frankly, that's a silly comment. The brand is not really the issue here. He simply has an older computer which only supports up to 256MB. But, generally, eMachines can be upgraded, too. It depends on the specific model more than the brand.

I have an HP laptop which came with ME and I was able to purchase an upgrade XP disk from the manufacturer. I did briefly have it updated to XP so it is doable. XP was in FAT32 format because that's what ME used and I did the upgrade, with instructions from HP and not a clean install.

I did have to uninstall some utilities because they would not work with XP (CD burning program) as directed by HP.

I use the last free version of WinDriversBackup
    http://www.downloadfile.org/Utilities/Backup_and_Copy_Utilities/WinDriversBackup.html
to collect all my drivers and archive on a CD so I have them if anything is missing on a clean install.

If his computer use mostly involves email, web browsing, and word processing, it may not be "really slow". Performance is going to be somewhat determined by what programs he has running in the background such as anti-virus, firewall, etc, and whether he maintains a clean, well-tuned system.

My mother has an eMachine T1440 with an IntelĀ® CeleronĀ® Processor 1.40GHz and 256MB of RAM. That's my point of reference for above comments.

Well if you say so, but from my experience (I run a IT shop) most people aren't even happy with 512MB let alone 256MB ...

Yes i hated the one i had it was so slow

633mhz with 512mb of ram and was running windows ME

I kinda Agreed with Drizzles most people are not happy with the E Machine but all so if they are just useing it for stuff like the internet then it was fine but was not good for playing big games on it.
