Upgrade USB for IPOD?

Just purchased an IPOD and a portable 80gb hard drive. When I plug either into my IBM R30 laptop, I get the following message:
"HI-SPEED USB Device Plugged into non-HI-SPEED USB hub."

Can I upgrade the USB 1.1 to USB 2 in the laptop?

I have a desktop in a home office that has a hi-speed USB, but I want to be able to use my laptop in the evenings while I'm in the family room to update my IPOD and not isolate myself from my family in my office.

If it is possible to upgrade to USB 2.0 and not at a major cost, could you please also give me some references to reputable hardware on-line stores where I could give them all of the stats on my laptop and they will tell me exactly what I need.

Do you consider this forum to be the one to come to when I'm interested in only hardware/software issues and not virus', etc.? If not, what sites would you recommend?

    Thanks in advance.:)

Probably your best solution may be to purchase a USB 2.0 PC Card (used to be called PMCIA). This SHOULD overrride your USB 1.1 installed in your laptop.

Make sure you get some advice from someone you know regarding this as I have never tried it and don't want you to waste your $$$ on something that doesn't work.

In theory it should, but laptops are funny beasts.
Hardware gurus, please step in. Bazza
