I am looking to upgrade From XP Pro 32 bit and 4GB of NVIDIA SLI memory, to Windows7 64 bit, on a ASUS P5N32-E SLI, Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 CPU, board and go to 8GB. Two questions: 1. Can I load W7 64 bit? 2. load up to 8GB?
    Thanks.

To do the Windows 7 64 bit load, I plan to do a clean install. Does that mean it will wipe out all my partitions as they are today? I have OS & Programs in C: ; all "My Documents" in D:; and E: is empty. Can I just do a clean install in C:?

Yup, that'll work, format and install on C.

Remember the backups eh?;) Especially other than IE. Try out Windows Easy Transfer for other things. I've never used it. Let us know how that works out for you.

Okay augiedoggie, here it goes: the clean install was "clean" I used the Windows "Easy Transfer" software and as usual, some things worked well, other, not so well.

What worked well - my OS settings were there and ALL my mail (archived or current) was there (great help because this is the most user-hostile thing Windows does). It downloaded new drivers for others that would not work

The one thing that did not work so well - It installed ALL my data that IS in D: drive in C: drive (which I had to delete - no biggie really), however, it also did not create the link from C: to D: for the "My Documents" file we all had in XP. So I had to do this on my own (re-learn for W7).

Other than that, all is well. Ah, 2 New Issues: 1. only 3 out of my 4 screens work (the connectivity is there - I had forgotten to unplug that screen originally and W7 turned it on), later, with all screens plugged in, it did not. 2. if I leave the machine alone for too long, they all go BLACK and forces a hardware reboot. Any suggestions?

    Thanks for the help.

Two things, go to power options in control panel and set your display(s) to 'never turn off' and do same for hibernation, these were the two things that had me in the same boat as you. Maybe someone has a more elegant solution.

Also, turn off the 'auto reboot' in properties in case you get a BSOD, this way you'll at least have some info on the screen to ponder for google or supply in a thread.

It's good to hear that Easy Transfer was almost that but it's tough for MS to write a perfect app in view of all the various permutations and combinations that are out there. Congrats!
