Hi. I am a bit less geekish I am afraid than most of you folks, but hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

My wife's Toshiba Satellite C55Dt-A521 (Win 8.1, 6GB RAM) was running really slow. After going thru the usual stuff - clearing cache, removing unwanted apps, removing programs from starting up, etc, I bit the bullet and reloaded the machine back to factory settings.

Still a bit slow. So I thought of upgrading memory. I checked Toshiba site, and the machine can be upgraded to 16 GB of memory.

I ordered an 8GB Memory Module: Kingston Technology 8GB 1600MHz PC3-12800 1.35V SODIMM Memory for Select Toshiba Notebooks KTT-S3CL/8G

Went to install memory - saw a 4GB and 2 GB chip installed. I put the new 8GB chip into the slot where the 4GB was, and installed the 4 GB chip where the 2 GB was. So now I'd expect to have 12GB of memory.

The 8GB module clicked in nicely (first slot on bottom). The 4GB module fit fine, but didn't seem to "click".

Booted up machine. All ok. Yet when I go into Windows -> System it shows the installed memory as "Not Available".

Obviously I must have some memory installed correctly for the machine to boot up, right? What does "Not Available" mean?

Couldn't find any info on google, so hoping folks here can point me in the right direction.

Meanwhile I am running the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool.

Is it possible I need to upgrade the BIOS to recognize the memory?

    Any help appreciated.

Update: Pressed F2 when booting up, and it looks like 12GB of memory are reported correctly. So my question is if I see 12GB memory this way, why is it not displayed from Win 8.1? (Or is this a software question)?

    Update your WEI files.

From an admin command promot or powershell, run "winsat prepop"

Reboot and see if it reads it then.

Ran "winsat prepop" and restarted, and still shows Installed Memory: Not Available.

    What does msinfo32 show?

Typed msinfo and it opened a window. Got the message "Cannot access the Windows Management Instrumentation software. Windows Management files may be moved or missing. "

So then I googled the message and came across this link http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...nagement/8849f190-cf4b-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5

This allowed me to rebuild the Windows Management Instrumentation repository.

I then followed the second set of instructions, restarted, typed msinfo and received a message "Refreshing System Information..."

I then saw Installed Physical Memory as 12 GB.

Then went and tried System again and now I show installed memory of 12 GB (11.6 GB usable).

Thank you so much. By pointing me to run msinfo you enabled me to solve my issue. :) :wave
