I finished upgrading my PC yesterday, a troublesome experience ending in me running down the shops to get a new power supply after mine couldnt cope, im now running on.

    Motherboard: GIGABYTE 965P-DS4
    Processor: Intel E6300 Core 2 Duo 1.86
    RAM: Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 (2x 1gb)
    GFX CARD: BFG 7600GT 256mb

Everything is running quite happily but due to my lack of money i still hav 5 IDE drives and no SATA.

While im only concerned with running 4 of the Drives my new mobo has only 1 IDE port, (i looked around for one with 2 but couldnt find one to go with my processor etc. upgrade)

Ive attached my HDDs to the IDE port and am running windows and everything fine. I then bought 2 Asonic SATA to IDE Dongles.

While my CDRW works fine my DVD doesnt seem to want to work with it :S any ideas would be much appreciated

    thx

Also while ive just been tinkering ive noticed that my PC is spending an abnormally long time on the windows loading screen :| surely that should get quicker with an upgrade? When in windows though everything seems happy and in games my FPS has increased from 20 to 150-200 :)

Yes, but not as much as you might think since you are still loading off of the same hard drive. If it takes longer to load, then something may need to be tweaked in Windows.

Hmmm any ideas on what? Ive only noticed it cause ive been rebooting with various SATA ports to try n get my DVD drive to detect and it seems to be taking an abnormally long time in a two places,

firstly: detecting drives ---- which i assume is some confusion taking place as to the drives present

secondly: The windows loading screen (running XP) so the windows logo with the lloading bar underneath

And i still havnt found any reason why the CD drive detects and the DVD doesnt, very confused and cant think of anything else to try :| any suggestions would be great

    Update Firmware

Did you try to update the firmware of your DVD drive? Because of the new DL format many older DVD drive manufatures have released updates for their drives, you may want to check their website.

I know that point is kind of moot now, so maybe try updating from another PC that can can see your DVD drive. Also make sure that your BIOS is up to date, and turn off any advanced settings your MB may have for Sata transfer enhancements in the BIOS.

    An interesting update:

A friend of mine suggested soemthing i might have overlooked. Since the drives were previous running on IDE i had left the DVD drive on slave.

Changing this to master and my DVD drive has now detected HURRAH!

However my CD drive has disapeared  ???? do i need raid drivers or something???

On second thoughts i did change the dongles round, is it more likely that one of them is broken? Allthought both are showing power lights etc.

Can anyone confirm wether i need raid drivers or something to run 2 SATA optical drives? Cause i hav no idea this is my first time using SATA. If not it looks likely that one of the dongles i recieved is broken and needs replacing.

    Thanks

Do u need any drivers to run two SATA devices? (ones a CD ones a DVD drive)

Would appreciate confirmation, cause if not i need to return the convertor thing, and they have a 14 day policy

    Thx
