First things first. I have a Dell Dimension B110. Running Windows XP Home.

First, I tried to delete my Adobe Reader 8.1.1 to update it to Adobe Reader 9 from www.adobe.com. This became an issue when add/remove programs was unable to uninstall Adobe Reader 8. I checked the Adobe support forum and found that it was a know issue so I tried their solution. I downloaded Windows install clean up and used that to remove Adobe Reader 8. Then I downloaded the Adobe Reader 9. I found that although Adobe Reader 9 said that it was installed properly I was unable to open PDF files on the internet. (I use FireFox 3.) I uninstalled Adobe Reader 9 and downloaded Adobe Reader Lite 9 from MajorGeeks. This allowed me to view PDF files online. I thought that all was peachy until I tried to open a PDF file that I have saved to my hard drive. Every time I tried to open it I got a message the Adobe encountered a problem and had to close...sorry for the inconvenience. I became so fed up with adobe that I removed it and came back to MajorGeeks to download Foxit. However, Foxit only works on some of the PDF files I have on my hard drive. One of the very important documents that I saved a while back gives me this message:

This PDF form requires a newer version of Adobe Reader. Without a newer version, the form may be displayed, but it might not work properly. Some form elements might not be visible at all. If an internet connection is available, clicking OK will download and install the latest version.

Well, then it was back to MajorGeeks for Adobe Reader 9. Towards the end of the install I get the following error message:

Error 1402. Could not open key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\CLSID\{C523F39F-9C83-11D3-9094-00104BD0D535}\ProgID.
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

I looked up the error on the adobe support forum and found this:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=329137

I tried the Regedit solution for XP but was unsuccessful. Solution # 4 says that it might be spyware. I am going to run Spybot and see what I get. I would be glad for any help you can offer.

Got it to install. I guess that I was feeling desperate because I have been going around in circles for a week. Spybot found WildTangent on my computer. I removed it and re-did the RegEdit, then my install took.

    Anyway, thanks for listening!
