Upgraded to Quicktime 7 for Vista and all I get is this crappy Error 46

I recently had an issue with Quicktime while I was working on a composition in Adobe AfterEffects. I had imported a couple of QT clips to work on and they would not show up properly. All that was displayed was a blank white frame, no video no love. So's I thought to myself, perhaps upgrading to a newer Quicktime would fix things. Although this issue was odd (I had been working with similar clips the day before) I found and downloaded a new QT

7.1.6, installed it and went to test my clips. This is when I saw:

    Error message:
"Error 46: Could not load or find the QuickTime ActiveX control."

I did some research and found 3 sources that claimed the cause was related to permissions in the registry and that QT would behave differently under different user profiles and the steps needed to try to reset them to work:

Now the account that I log in with is an administrator account. I got so sick of the constant action permissions Vista throws out while just normally using my NLE's and VFX editors that I can work smoother by being the Admin. So my situation did not fit because I had the only user account. I was unable to access the cited registry entries, I get:

    "Error Opening Key:
QTOControl.QTCantrol.1 cannot be opened. An error is preventing this key from being opened. Details: Access is denied."

?? Hey I'm the Admin right? How can my access be denied? What gives? I poked at the entries with a few well timed right clicks and got a command menu which then let me try to select 'Permissions' and next got this strange message.

    "Windows Security:
You do not have permission to view the current permission settings for QTOControl.QTCantrol.1, but you can make permission changes."

?? Really, well lets just see about that. I click OK and add my own profile to the Group or user names field. Initially the 'Special Permissions' box has a grayed out check. I then try to check off the Allow for both Full Control and Read. I explore the other tabs and under the owner tab and the Current Owner field displays, "Unable to display current owner." But it let me change myself to be the owner. Next I added myself to the security groups, check off the allow and got through advanced and manually had to change myself to be the owner. Wash rinse repeat for like 100 keys. Still no worky.

Any ideas? Sorry this is so all over the map, but if you can follow it maybe you know what I am missing.

I did consider it, but have not tried it yet. I will tonight. I was concerned that it would not properly integrate with my NLE Vegas, but I might be able to work around it for the short term. It is rather important that I get the system to run properly and find a solution my clients always need to see their product on my machine as it will appear on theirs.

    Do you have iTunes installed?

Yes I do not use it but suspected that it might need it so I installed it. No effect error 46 still pops up when I launch the player. On the upside my rouge QT work inside AfterEffects now. I have not tried to just launch any *.mov and see if it bypasses the Error 46.

OK. I was going to suggest uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling QT. But, don't mess with it if it's working now.

I installed the Quicktime Alternative but there seemed to be an issue with creating and deleting registry keys during the unistall phase for Quicktime and then for the install of the QT Alt. Does anyone know what I need to do? Should I try to follow each reg key that the system reports trouble with and nuke it and then click retry?

Also th playback quality of my files through Quicktime Alternative is pretty bad. On my Mac they are crisp but through QT Alt there are jagged edges. Any reasons for this? Anyone?
