Upgraded to Windows 10, how to install on a new SSD

Have completed a clean upgrade to Windows 10 (from 7) , bought a new SSD and want to install Windows on the SSD.

Having some problems completing this as used the windows media tool to crate an installation dvd. When I swapped drives and ran the disk it asked for the product key? I am not aware of receiving this after the upgrade.

I thought to have both drives installed and clone my old HDD to the new SSD. But, seems that I this model (Asus G73JG laptop), only recognises a SSD when it's in the primary slot. Doesn't appear in the BIOS or windows when installed in the 2nd bay.

So, what am I doing wrong, how can I install windows on this new drive?

When I went through that I imaged my Win 10 on HDD, swapped the drive for a new SSD, and restored the image. Went smoothly.

 

I can't have both drives in the laptop at once though as it doesn't recognise the SSD in the 2nd bay.

Is it worth getting an external drive caddy and cloning the HDD to the SSD that way?

 

You aren't reading what I said. Image the HDD to an external drive, then remove the HDD and insert the SSD. Boot to your imaging program's rescue CD and restore the image to the SSD. You only need one drive for this, plus the external holding the image.

 

No need for that tone, I did read your post it just wasn't very clear. I don't have an external drive but thanks anyway.

 

In that case you will need a caddy for your SSD and clone the HDD rather than image it. I avoid recommending cloning - too many cases of cloning the wrong way and blanking the HDD. 2½" caddies are quite cheap fortunately.
