I am going to download the latest bios from the Dell website and it gives me the option of using HTTP or FTP.

    Which is preffered?

I am about to upgrade from W98se to XP Pro.

    Thanks...

It doesn't matter, I suppose ftp is perfered. Since it's meant for file transfers (ftp=file transfer protocol). Of course either way you're just downloading the bios to your PC, it's only going to take few seconds and once you have it you'd still have to flash the bios.

Why do you want to flash the bios anyways? It shouldn't be something you need to do to install windows XP.

Someone on this forum suggested that I down load the latest bios before moving up to XP. I have a 2001 system.

Do you think it is necessary?

It's possible it's necessary, I had laptop that needed update to be able to run XP.
There are risk's when flashing bios, if you have power failure or download the wrong bios ya might kill your MOBO.
Usually where you download update it will note the changes or fixes that the particular update provides.
You can always try to install XP without updating bios the worst that can happen is failed install, then update bios.
