well i believe it's time i upgraded my processor.
    i have : AMD-K6(tm) 3D processor, 451 MHz, 256 MB RAM
motherboard is: ASUS P5A super 7
the paperwork says the board provides a 321 pin ZIF socket 7 that is backwards compatible with ZIF Socket 5 Processors.
I don't want to spend a whole lot of money, but would like something that is compatible with todays hardware, e.g. the audigy sound card i recently installed that keeps crashing the computer because it requires a pentium 3 or better.
    any ideas?
    thanks.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks.

I think your best bet would be to build/buy a new computer. Yours is a bit outdated by todays standards. You can build a pretty decent machine for not a whole lot of money.

thanks for the info ibbonkers, i'm gonna go with what you sent me.
it'll be the first one i built, so it's going to be a learning experience.
for $300 you really can't go wrong.
    thanks again.

I was bargain shopping for something most could afford that they could upgrade as they want.Thats just a bare template per se that gets people into the newer technology at a good price :)

You came up with a great list ibbonkers. I was working on one, but it was a little over $400 without a case... I just thought the drive upgrade would be a good idea for not a lot of cash.

i'm looking forward to building this, but must admit i have a little anxiety about the whole thing. - never did it before so when i here things about setting bus frequency and jumper settings it makes my stomach turn.
i hope that the hardware will give a full step by step description of what to do.
further, i currently am running an xp pro upgrade from windows 98. will i be able to use this (first install 98, than the xp upgrade), or will i need to go get vista?

you should be fine using the upgrade but dont worry about installing 98 just boot windows cd and when it asks for disk of older windows put it in and it will continue :)
