Upgrading from ME to XP

We did a bad thing. We opted to reformat a hard drive that was acting up. We were running Windows XP and MS Office. When we reformatted, it took the system back to ME. Now when we go to upgrade to XP again, it is telling us we have a hardware conflict. We have googled the error message and can not figure out why we can't get it to work. We have taken out ANY hardware that we can think of that we installed since we upgraded originally. Anyone have any ideas?

Yeah.... I checked out the error message at Microsoft and there's nothing there about it. It seems to me that it might be a memory error. If you have more than 1 RAM stick installed, remove one (or two) and see if you still get the error. Swap 'em around in all possible combos. Sometimes, just reseating the RAM and PCI devices can make difference. You might also try disconnecting the floppy drive and any extra CD drives or hard drives. I've seen a bad floppy drive bring a PC to its knees. Download and run a bootable memory diagnostic tool (link: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Microsoft_Windows_Memory_Diagnostic_d3955.html or maybe try this: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Memtest86_d4226.html) and go to your hard drive maker's web site and download and run their diagnostic tool to determine the health of your hard drive. And lastly, make sure your BIOS settings are on 'Fail-Safe Defaults', or at the very least, use the default settings, or better yet, clear the BIOS to factory settings using the motherboard jumper..... whew.... long post
