has anyone got fed up with xp and decided to go back to win98?
is it beneficial to free up memory, clutter and disk space?
would a new pc run super quick with 98? as opposed to soso on xp?
anyone any expriences to share would be useful before i give it a go?
    thanks

i seriously doubt that you will see any improvement (speed wise) reverting back to windows 98?? other than the fact that more and more people (companies) are not supporting (or getting close to), microsoft included, windows 98. you might have problems getting all your drivers, and such? i'd say that 98 isn't as secure, and although new virus/trojans/spyware, and such are mostly for newer os, i don't see a benefit. i however (on this computer, which is windows me), want to upgrade to xp, but can't come up with the money (@ $150) to buy xp. i think most things run better on xp. my laptop, which is wireless, and my other computer in my study is xp (wireless as well). seem to run alot better, with less problems overall.

are you sure that you don't have alot of stuff running in the background, and/or alot of stuff (not needed) starting up? i see alot of people install new programs, like instant messengers, etc., and it runs on boot up. anyway, all of this is my own personal opinion, and g/l on whatever you decide. - sosmaman

Go back to an unsupported, half arse OS on top of an OS?

--No smart people have gone back :)
    Of course.
Yes and no (mostly no). Less overhead, more compatibility issues, severe resource limitations, no support for hard drives over 137gb, ram over 512mb can cause crashes.
MS has dropped support for 98. THat means no more drivers, or software support in the very near future. It would be a mistake to go back to 98.

    I agree with Adryna....but would also disagree with him if;
the PC in question was not adequate enough to support XP. Using an older OS that has less overhead, that uses less HD space and system resources could be a wiser choice....and for those reasons the OS itself would seem to be running faster. At the same time, installing a much older OS like Windows9x on a machine built with recent, top-size components could be asking for trouble as well. Bottomline, if your system (Hardware) specs meets the 'recommended' values required by XP, I'd say go with XP.

Yes, I still use Windows98SE and love it, never had BSoD, if I do it is because of installing dozens of shareware/freeware utilities to test for spyware, functionality, etc.
I also play with the registry a lot on the test systems. But systems I use/used with caution and do effective maintenance on, that is also build with old BUT good parts, do not experience any major problems. Compatibility is also a matter of having the support for the devices and applications installed, having the proper drivers for the devices and if needed, the required patches for the installed applications.

Does the fact that M$ dropping support for Windows9x by 2006 make it a bad OS? No. All Windows flavors had a purpose and useful at the time they were developed and even at the current day. Even Windows ME showed us how M$ could make big mistakes because of its greed.

I'd not recommend Windows Millennium edition to anyone though to some, it might have appeared purrtier on the surface and had support for more devices than Windows9x did.
    It simply sucked.

I agree with not going to Win 98 at this point in time, due to the lack of support from Microsoft. But have you thought about Win 2000 Professional instead of Win XP?

    thanks for your input geeks,
well seems like newer software is not always bakwards compatible, thats a major problem I guess.
I think i will stick with xp (do not have win2k) and edit down the registry to a bare bones system, guess its best not to downgrade
cheers and good day to you all!

Like techiegirl2, I would suggest going with Win2K if you have a prob with XP. I have had both and not a prob with either.

I have several older computers that have been upgraded to XP and run pretty good. you can adjust xp by going to CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM>
    ADVANCED>PERFORMANCE> SETTINGS>ADJUST FOR BEST PERFORMANCE.

Make sure you have at least 512 RAM, and go to this page to Optimize XP. I'm sure you'll see a big difference.
